I love that it's a cozy small town mystery... I enjoy the plot twists, and loved the world building threads that weave each book in the series together. This is something the author has always excelled at, and why I've stuck to reading her work my whole life. :)
However, I really dislike the constant references to diets and the characters fat shaming themselves. And I especially hate the constant attempts at the authors self insert, meta, former romance writer, nonsense that comes from the character named Sarah.
Overall it's a pleasant junk food type book. I finished each one in a single sitting. So they're quick reads, and fun too.

Historia
Hidden in the depths of eighteenth-century London, a secret apothecary shop caters to an unusual kind of clientele. Women across the city whisper of a mysterious figure named Nella who sells well-disguised poisons to use against the oppressive men in their lives. But the apothecary’s fate is jeopardized when her newest patron, a precocious 12-year-old, makes a fatal mistake, sparking a string of consequences that echo through the centuries.

horrible women tropes
Revisado: 01-18-24
I don't really understand why everyone leaving reviews on this book are saying there was lots of surprises, and twists and turns... when us the reader, were aware of every single fact that the protagonist was trying to uncover in, her research. The story was not surprising at all, and it was dissatisfying to know the answers before the protagonist did.
the most egregious character trait for me, is the protagonists "I'm not like other girls" type of personality. as if being in college and reading books makes you "quirky"?
This is simply dumb.
That said, a 12-year-old girl thinking her period is a ghost haunting her, that's one of the most original storylines I've ever heard of in my life, and I found it quite amusing.

Historia
In an industry where celebrity chefs are known as much for their salty talk and quick tempers as their food, Eric Ripert stands out. The winner of four James Beard Awards, co-owner and chef of a world-renowned restaurant, and recipient of countless Michelin stars, Ripert embodies elegance and culinary perfection. But before the accolades, before he even knew how to make a proper hollandaise sauce, Eric Ripert was a lonely young boy in the south of France whose life was falling apart.

Historia
A fascinating tour of creatures from the surface to the deepest ocean floor: How Far the Light Reaches invites us to envision wilder, grander, and more abundant possibilities for the way we live. Conservation journalist Sabrina Imbler discovers that some of the most radical models of family, community, and care can be found in the sea, from gelatinous chains that are both individual organisms and colonies of clones to deep-sea crabs that have no need for the sun, nourished instead by the chemicals and heat throbbing from the core of the Earth.

Completely Original

This is such a unique way to relate a biography of ones life, I've never read anything like it before. I also really enjoyed the scientific insights to fish, despite coming into thinking I'd find it boring. Lovely reading as well, one of the best audio performances I've listened to on here.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Catharsis in a Book
Revisado: 01-23-23
I can only imagine that Harry feels immense catharsis at the end of writing this... I hope his brother will one day do the work of overcoming trauma, so that they can be reunited again as brothers and family.
I found it incredibly moving, and will be buying multiple copies to gift to friends and family.

Historia
Anthony Bourdain’s death by suicide in June 2018 shocked people around the world. Bourdain seemed to have it all: an irresistible personality, a dream job, a beautiful family, and international fame. The reality, though, was more complicated than it seemed. Bourdain became a celebrity with his bestselling book Kitchen Confidential. He parlayed it into a series of hit television shows, including the Food Channel’s Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations and CNN’s Parts Unknown. But his bad boy charisma belied a troubled spirit.

nothing new
Revisado: 10-13-22
I have read all of the biographical books by Tony, and by Tony's friends, and nothing presented here is new, or even remotely interesting, information. It feels like the author relished in sprinkling in hearsay, speculation, and his own opinions.
Most of the info in this book is recycled from Tony's own works. If you really want to know about the man, read his books, read Tom Vitale's book, watch his Travel shows, and peruse his social media history... This wasn't worth my audible credit.
It gets three stars, instead of two, for at the very least being well written and nicely performed. Good Job on the sound.

Historia
Burnout. Many women in America have experienced it. What’s expected of women and what it’s really like to be a woman in today’s world are two very different things - and women exhaust themselves trying to close the gap between them. Sisters Emily Nagoski, PhD, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA, are here to help end the cycle of feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Instead of asking us to ignore the very real obstacles and societal pressures that stand between women and well-being, they explain with compassion and optimism what we’re up against - and teach us how to fight back.

I struggled to stay focused on this one, I found the information useful, but the narration was stale, and involved a lot of sighing which I found gross. It took me weeks to get through it, I just didn't feel compelled to go back to it. I wish I had read the hard copy instead.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Amazing.
Revisado: 07-31-20
The audio and narrative style of this book entranced me, I could not unplug from it for hours on end. It made me cry, and laugh, and gasp out loud in surprise and shock. I hesitate to attempt any type of summary, as I do not wish to spoil it for others.
As always, Malcolm delivers.
