Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

Bound to be a "Classic"
Revisado: 09-13-20
So esoteric and self-congratulatory that it rivals Russian literature. Bound to torture high school English students for decades.

It’s the $10 million heist you’ve never heard of. In a matter of months, dozens of truckloads disappeared from American highways. But what were they carrying? Nuts. Marc Fennell takes you into a rabbit hole of crime syndicates, stolen identities and private investigators that will change the way you think about food forever. Eighty per cent of the world’s almonds are grown in the heart of California, but this journey will take you to Italy, the Spanish coast, deep under the earth and even into space.

very good first 4 chapters

The story of the heist was fascinating, but the last few chapters were too heavy in social commentary.

Historia
In 1518, in a small town in Alsace, Frau Troffea began dancing and didn't stop. She danced until she was carried away six days later, and soon 34 more villagers joined her. Then more. In a month more than 400 people had been stricken by the mysterious dancing plague. In late-19th-century England an eccentric gentleman founded the No Nose Club in his gracious townhome - a social club for those who had lost their noses, and other body parts, to the plague of syphilis for which there was then no cure.

Too much social commentary
Revisado: 08-11-19
The book covers an interesting topic, but the narrative is consistently interrupted by often sarcastic comments on how people should think or act in modern society. The author's personal opinions are so common, that I began to question the historical information presented as only that which supports her own world view. In the end it was so disruptive and I couldn't finish the book.

Exactly as expected
Revisado: 02-03-19
This book is exactly as described. Wealthy man has an existential mid-life crisis and is stuck in the car with a "guru" (con artist?) for weeks. Proceeds as you would expect in a long drawn out way. I almost couldn't finish it got so preachy.

Historia
Whether you’re a sunling or an earthling, growing up isn’t easy. Shy nine-year-old Gustafer Yellowgold has to grapple with neighborhood bullies, an over-achieving brother, and parental expectations just like kids on Earth do. He would rather lose himself in comic books and dream the day away than make deliveries for his father’s raisin-butchering business after school. Fateful events put Gustafer at his ultimate crossroad when he sees a darker opportunity to control his own destiny on the Sun.

Painful
Revisado: 11-18-18
Tries too hard. The story is trite and the special effects and songs don't mask an unimaginative plot.

So much potential
Revisado: 08-23-16
I REALLY wanted to like this book. Jim Dale is one of my favorite narrators and the plot sounded fascinating. I was so excited to start this book!
The first part was interesting enough; however the last four hours were so painful that I almost didn't finish. Peter has to be _the_ unluckiest person on the planet. Combine that with the last half hour of forced tie-in so the story matched Barrie's, and the narrative became so contrived as to be irritating.
Bottom line: so much potential, but the book didn't deliver
