Truly Appreciate All These Stories
- De Susan en 10-11-22
Dear, Loving, Powerful — You MUST listen to this Podcast!
Revisado: 09-30-22
Thank you, Anderson Cooper, for allowing us a peek inside your grief. It truly is helping me deal with my own grief. It’s a subject that’s RARELY spoken of, and certainly not by people who influence the work and thoughts of others. I know your Mom — and from a farther distance your Dad and brother — would be proud of this work. I listened to the first three casts on one evening, and I can’t wait for the next ones. Hearing Stephen Colbert speak so openly about how the loss of his father and two brothers when he was so young showed me a glimpse of why he’s such a caring (even when funny) interviewer. Hearing BJ Miller speak so openly about going into medicine after losing three limbs humbled me. I keep remembering something I read a long time ago. The only way out of grief is through. You’re helping me — and probably many others — to feel those feelings. And not to take on board the pop-culture view of “just get over it”. The grief has gotten easier to bear, but it’s still there and sneaks up on me. And I know it always will. As Queen Elizabeth II said after the September 11th attacks, “Grief is the price we pay for love.” Again, thank you.

Brené Brown: Genius!
Revisado: 02-15-21
The original of this audiobook, which I also own, was performed by a voice actress. It was fine, but didn’t hold a candle to Brené’s later works, which she voiced. This 10th Anniversary edition is voiced by Brené herself. MUCH more authentic! The message comes through more clearly with Brené’s more natural delivery. What a gift these books have been, including upon further rereading (or relistening).

Historia
The recovery of the magnificent gem in Lord Attenbury's dazzling heirloom launched a shell-shocked young aristocrat on his career as a detective in 1921. Thirty years later, a happily married Lord Peter has just shared the secrets of that mystery with his wife, the detective novelist Harriet Vane. Suddenly, the new Lord Attenbury—grandson of Lord Peter’s first client—seeks his help to prove who owns the emeralds.

Lord Peter Wimsey: The Attenbury Emeralds
Revisado: 12-13-18
Jill Paton Walsh has written a great tangled yarn, with just the same insouciance as Dorothy L. Sayers wrote Lord Peter Wimsey in her lifetime. I only started figuring out “who done it” at the exact correct spot. Not too early (so as to make the plot seem too simple) nor too late (so as to make it look like the author pulled a nonexistent rabbit out of a newly-conjured hat). If you liked the Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane “canon”, you’ll enjoy this. Oh, and Edward Petherbridge narrates throughout. He’s my ideal LPW, and he hasn’t lost the light touch needed to play that gentleman.

You’ll love this compilation of radio plays. Very well done, and with some bonus interviews of the author at the end. Also, if you know the BBC TV productions, you may be surprised that these are not identical. And if you love the books, you’ll find the radio plays are VERY close to them. Wish I could find more!

Great Yarns, well told/acted
Revisado: 12-12-18
I only ever knew Alan Bennett from his appearances in things on TV — Beyond the Fringe, chatting with Parkinson. I may vaguely have known he was a writer. But of what, I could not have told you. When I selected one of two other Audible titles, I was told I “might like” this set of BBC Radio Plays. And boy, were they right! A couple have been made into movies — which I’ve heard of but hadn’t yet seen. Now, I think I’ll search those out, especially The History Boys and The Lady in the Van. And now, I’ve downloaded another set of Alan Bennett writings. Short stories, I believe. Can’t wait!
