Surrender, white people! After 400 years of white supremacy in America, a reckoning is here. Time to listen up, look history in the face, and surrender unjust privilege. These are the terms of peace - and they are unconditional. Hope you have a sense of humor, because this is going to sting. The legendary activist/comedian and author of the “hilarious yet soul-shaking” (Black Enterprise) best seller How Not to Get Shot returns to address a nation on the edge of civil war.

Mostly delightful!

Admittedly, this white listener was challenged to own some of the invectives while slowly realizing the author is a humorist. If the truth hurts, ...
Yes, there are critical insights in this book that we need to heed. Thanks to DLHughley for this opportunity.

Historia
Growing up in the Midwest, Judy Grathwohl never felt she belonged. “I belong out west,” she remembers telling her father. After joining the Sisters of St. Francis in the early 1960s and becoming Sister Marya, she came to realize that she craved a life beyond the traditional path of a Catholic nun. “Something other than dedicating my life to God was summoning me, some other life purpose,” she writes.

Revisado: 12-07-23
What a heart trip this was! Having known Marya for 60+ years, AND having had the gift of sometimes walking with her, sometimes behind her, always eager to see*hear*share reflections on our journey. I still hunger. You know? That feeling of WOW one has when soul is stirred. Oh, yes, I am so enriched, my heart so much lighter, my eyes and ears so keen to take note, to embrace, to have giddy, gut wrenching laughter and sweet, salty tears. It's all here if you want it. Really, you DO want it! Enjoy.

Historia
This stunningly personal document and extraordinary history of the turbulent '60s and early '70s displays James Baldwin's fury and despair more deeply than any of his other works. In vivid detail he remembers the Harlem childhood that shaped his early consciousness, the later events that scored his heart with pain - the murders of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, his sojourns in Europe and in Hollywood, and his return to the American South to confront a violent America face-to-face.

Thought provoking
Revisado: 11-06-23
This book was so well delivered that I felt I was hearing James Baldwin himself. It is my regret that I was unaware of his gifts back in a time I might have enjoyed a chance to hear him live. And, yes, I would have felt the sting of my skin supremacy because that's the way persons of color were represented in my schooling, my churching, my neighborhood. Happily, now my age and experience have exposed those lies I was taught. I remain grateful for the bitterness of James Baldwin among the many mentors who invite me to open my mind. I am deeply, powerfully impressed.

Historia
I'd Like You More If You Were More like Me takes on one of life's most important questions: How can I get closer to God and other people? We were created for deep connections. When people have deep connections, says John Ortberg, they win in life. When they don't have deep connections, they cannot win in life. I'd Like You More If You Were More like Me offers help in overcoming one of the biggest obstacles to making deep connections: the fact that we're so different. Different from God and different from each other.

Utterly demoralizing, well delivered
Revisado: 11-01-23
This story falls right in line with other accounts of white interference in the administration of justice on reservation lands. I'm certain that much remains covered up as Native American lands and people continue to be abused. It's a history that begs discovery. An admission that big money and corporate power will subvert at all cost. We can claim to be "United" states but we're a long way from unity among our cultural disparities. Sad. Shameful.

His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car.

4 principal characters, a convoluted plot
Revisado: 10-21-23
While I'm rating this work more positively than my gut feeling, I'm noting that the confusion I experience in understanding all the subtleties doesn't undo a certain quality in the finished work.
Is the title misleading?
Are the characters believable?
And, ultimately, what does it matter if I enjoyed the luxury of good read!
Go ahead. Find out for yourself.

Tough chew. Read best when hungry.
Revisado: 10-19-23
The gospels give ample challenge to any of us who want 'comfortable' religion.
The beatitudes, in particular, frame Jesus' invitation (challenge) to the practice of faithful living.
Richard Rohr takes great effort here to help us explore the facets of cultural, linguistic, personal/social, and spiritual intricacies of the content and the context of the Sermon on the Mount.
Enjoy!
I already anticipate a rereading. Especially chapters 8, 9.

Thorough review of common practices

Not especially insightful for me. Perhaps my daily prayer and participation in two study groups affords me more familiarity. I did like the quotes from other spiritual gurus that appeared within each chapter. Two things diminished my enjoyment: the pace of the Audible reading and some unfamiliar pronunciations. Overall it was worthwhile. The greeting cards have been a great find!

Just This is a collection of brief and evocative meditations and practices that invite us to cultivate the gift of waking up to the beauty of reality in all its glorious ordinariness. With his signature blend of contemplation, theology, and pastoral sensitivity, Fr. Richard Rohr creates a spaciousness for the soul to grow into a kind of seeing that goes far beyond merely looking to recognizing and thus appreciating.

Just as I Am is my truth. It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. Here, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage and screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and mother, a sister, and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams.

What a Story!
Revisado: 07-25-23
In much of her stage work I've always found Cecily Tyson captivating.
It's that way with this.
As her life story unfolds I felt such intimacy, a rare gift of the insiders view to an uncommon, gifted presence.
THIS is the stuff of cross cultural education. This enriches me personally as it invites me to appreciate human differences
in the light of non judgemental respect.
Any reader can readily identify with some facet of her story the gives greater meaning to their own.
