I tried, I really did but I just couldn't like the main character and I didn't have the patience to see if she ever became even reasonably happy. She had no charm nor did any of the supporting characters. Don't bother with this book

I didn't think I would love it as much as I did!

This captured my imagination, and my interest right away and held it the whole time. I can't recommend it more. Its a great adventure and a history and culture lesson all in one. The narrator is wonderful and does all of the characters so well. He is creative with his voices and characterizations. Well done!

I think that the story might be ok, but the narrator has the most monotone, bland voice. I think I might try reading it instead.

Very long, needed editing

The overall story was good with a lot of well developed and interesting characters but I kept wishing for the resolution. I knew it was coming 1/2 way through, looked at the number of chapters left and my jaw dropped! The narrator was excellent and helped me stick with it.

Only because it introduced me to a new series of books

I liked the little bit of magic introduced into the mystery

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Her American accents were atrocious and the main male character was whispered in a very unappealing way.

I will read the rest of the series rather than listen.

There was not any charm to this novel. I have enjoyed Belmond's other books. I didn't enjoy the characters.

fascinating Chinese culture

Would you listen to Fortune Cookie again? Why?

I love learning about the Chinese culture of the time and how entertaining Bryce and his team of researchers make the story. I don't often listen or read books twice but this will stay in my library...who knows maybe I will.

"Chairmen Mao", she reminds me of so many matriarchs I have met

Another wonderful read by Bryce

As usual, Bryce has written another interesting novel about a point in history that is fascinating and has allowed another set of characters to survive by their natural intelligence, and kindness to fellow man. I enjoyed learning the history of the Pacific campaign of WWII, also. I highly recommend this book.
