Would you listen to Night Moves again? Why?

One of the better entries in Kellerman's remarkably consistent Delaware/Sturgis series.

What other book might you compare Night Moves to and why?

It's true that if you've read one book in this series, you've sort of read them all. This one doesn't diverge from the formula but at the same time, it doesn't feel tired.

Would you listen to another book narrated by John Rubenstein?

Rubenstein isn't a great fit for THIS book or this series. He's incredibly talented and cranks out one distinctive character voice after another. However, his tone is too often more fitting for the Simpsons than a low key California noir. At times, this leaves characters seeming dumb/simplistic or cartoonish (particularly an issue with Detective Moses Reed). I adjusted after a while and, like I say, I appreciated his talent, but it's not a great fit with the material.

If you could sum up The Fifth Gospel in three words, what would they be?

A solid thriller with a few more literary aspirations than most in the genre.

What other book might you compare The Fifth Gospel to and why?

"The Rule of Four,"

Which character – as performed by Jack Davenport – was your favorite?

Alex Andreou

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. Too long and the pace is very measured--in a good way

Any additional comments?

Nice thriller. Good for those who like Dan Brown or Steve Barry but want something that aims a little higher (but not quite as high as say, Umberto Eco). Smartly written. Great tone throughout--rather than breathless, more sad and a little bittersweet which lends an appropriate weight to the material. Readers get a fine story and learn a bit about the Vatican--not the inner chambers of power so much as the day-to-day life of those who live and work there.

If you could sum up So Many Roads in three words, what would they be?

An interesting apporach

What other book might you compare So Many Roads to and why?

Almost any rock biography

What about Sean Runnette’s performance did you like?

Clear without being dry.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A strange trip deconstructed.

Any additional comments?

A nice, comprehensive band bio that doesn't shy away from some of the darker stuff. Basing each chapter around a specific show/date adds just enough variety to keep it from being the "same old, same old" band bio. Good stuff for fans and newcomers alike.

If you could sum up Beat the Reaper in three words, what would they be?

Over-the-top

What did you like best about this story?

Bazell's voice, particularly as brought to life by Petkoff.

Which scene was your favorite?

All of the flashbacks

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not quite, but close.

Any additional comments?

"Beat the Reaper" works because even though the situations and scenes contained within stretch the bounds of credibility, narrator Peter Brown's voice (as written by Bazell and perfectly brought to life by Robert Petkoff) is perfect. It's the literary equivalent of a Tarantino film, too over-the-top and outlandish to take seriously, too entertaining to turn away. Really, really fun stuff that takes itself just seriously enough. The ending feels a bit rushed but I look forward to later entries in the series.

Would you listen to Lush Life again? Why?

The genius of Price's story is not the plot so much as the dialogue and sense of place. It works as an audiobook largely because of Cannavale's exceptional reading with convincing dialogue, no matter the background of the character. When reading from the narrator's POV, he strikes just the right tone. I rarely, if ever, got the feeling I was listening to somebody doing a character. A good book but an even better performance.

What did you like best about this story?

Its sense of place.

Which character – as performed by Bobby Cannavale – was your favorite?

Matty Clark
