Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

A compelling analysis of the impact of social media on society
Revisado: 07-06-24
This was a deep and thoughtful analysis of how addictive technology is rewriting a generation. I am a social media researcher and I thought it was an excellent, accessible analysis that everyone should read in its entirety. Strongly recommend. Even if you don’t agree with everything, there is a lot here we should all be discussing.

Historia
For too long, the term insubordination has evoked negative feelings and mental images. But for ideas to evolve and societies to progress, it’s vital to cultivate rebels who are committed to challenging conventional wisdom and improving on it. Change never comes easily. And most would-be rebels lack the skills to overcome hostile audiences who cling desperately to the way things are. Based on cutting-edge research, The Art of Insubordination is the essential guide for anyone seeking to be heard, make change, and rebel against an unhealthy status quo.

Fascinating book on the value of dissent
Revisado: 04-17-22
I’m the author of a book on group dynamics and was nevertheless intrigued by the new insights and studies shared in this book by Todd Kashdan. He explains why we should all care about dissenters—even when we disagree with them—because they unlock our own capacity to share our authentic beliefs and perspectives to make the world a bit better.

Historia
Anthropologist David Graeber - one of our most important and provocative thinkers - traces the peculiar and unexpected ways we relate to bureaucracy today and reveals how it shapes our lives in ways we may not even notice...though he also suggests there may be something perversely appealing - even romantic - about bureaucracy.

Good book, until the last chapter
Revisado: 12-24-21
This was a little dry, but otherwise fascinating critique of institutional rules. There were lots of interesting insights along the way, and the book peaked in the middle, but it went off the rails in the last chapter analyzing Batman and Bane (and presumably, Christopher Nolan’s politics).

Good review of criticism, but a bit overstated at times
Revisado: 11-04-21
This is a very good analysis of some of the bad misapplications of psychology and behavioral science from a journalistic perspective.
The main limitation is that it invokes structural solutions to most social problems. While I agree this is often the right approach to address many big problems, it does not fully solve all the problems and most scientists (eg nudge researchers) would also agree with these solutions. They are not in opposition to the research, but often a complement.
Therefore, the critiques are making a straw man IMHO of the goals of some of the research and positions of the researchers themselves. If you can look past that rhetorical technique, the book itself is quite good.

Useful, but over simplified and not based on any evidence
Revisado: 10-11-21
This book was easy to read and had some potentially useful advice, but all of the advice was just based on anecdote and personal opinion. There was no evidence that any of it would actually work. The book was also full of hyperbole and overstatement so it was hard to trust the author.
