Historia
England, 1914. The world is at war. Captain Hastings, injured and shaken, is invited to Styles Court to recover. It’s a grand old country house - the family home of his old friend - and a perfect haven. Or so it seems. But in the blistering summer heat, trouble is afoot. Simmering tensions are tearing the family apart, and it all comes to a head in the most horrifying way.

Perfect!

Peter Dinklage is great as Poirot. I felt like I was listening to David Suchet.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

An Outlier
Revisado: 01-12-25
I’ve listened to and enjoyed the whole series, but this book is an outlier. I don’t know if it’s the plot, the narration, or both, but I don’t even feel any fondness for this version of Gamache. Please bring back the Downtown Abbey narrator, and please keep future stories grounded in the characters.
Also, the story hinges on an absurd premise—a monk who is “afraid of beige” is willing to commit a grave sin by pretending to be a priest and listening to confessions? Just to cover for a busy priest or whatever silly reason? No way.

Historia
Flight attendant Allegra Patel loves her job, but today is her twenty-eighth birthday and she’d rather not be placating a plane full of passengers unhappy about a long delay. There’s the well-dressed man in seat 4C desperate not to miss his daughter’s musical. A harried mother frantically tries to keep her toddler and baby quiet. Honeymooners still in their wedding finery dream of their new lives, while a chatty emergency room nurse dreams of retirement.

Loved it
Revisado: 11-28-24
This is one of those books where I stayed up late listening to it for 4 hours straight…and then couldn’t make myself listen to the last half hour for the next few days because I didn’t want to say goodbye to the characters I’d grown to care for. The best kind of book!

Historia
Lucy Sullivan is 26 and living it up (and occasionally down) in London. Hers is a life of quiet, undisciplined desperation. But when she and three friends visit a psychic for a bit of fun and the woman's predictions start coming true, Lucy is horrified. For the fortune-teller insisted she'd soon be married - within the year, in fact. Not only does Lucy not have a boyfriend, but the chances of getting one are looking slim. Between the bottles of wine, antidepressants and her addiction to self-help books, she's not quite ready to walk, or even stumble, down the aisle sober.

Great story that builds over time
Revisado: 03-06-21
At first I agreed with some of the other reviewers that the characters seemed unlikable, but as I continued to listen, I found that the book was really a lovely story about a young woman finding herself after years of letting people mistreat her (and mistreating herself). It made me think about that process in my own life and I unexpectedly teared up when the book ended. I highly recommend this book—just be patient with Lucy while she figures things out!

A Delightful Book
Revisado: 02-16-21
Both the book and the narration deserve more than five stars. During this dark time of COVID, the book was a little bit of sunshine—the characters are warm and lovely, and of course the plot is interesting as well! There’s also an interview with the author at the end of the audiobook—definitely worth a listen.
