Historia
No one captures the complexities of Appalachia - a rugged, brutal landscape of exquisite beauty - as evocatively and indelibly as author and poet Ron Rash. Winner of the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, two O Henry prizes, and a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award, Rash brilliantly illuminates the tensions between the traditional and the modern, the old and new south, tenderness and violence, man and nature.

Poor performance
Revisado: 05-15-24
The reader’s attempt at accents was bizarre and distracting. He pronounced the same words with different accents within the same sentences.

Historia
Author of the National Book Award-winning All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier.

It’s art. A terrible beauty.

McCarhty’s greatness is on display. Try Suttree if this is too gruesome.
Richard Poe is excellent reading both.
Any negative reviews should be discounted entirely.

Very accurate reviews. I have nothing to add except that this is the finest work of America’s finest living author. I’m simply grateful.

I don’t remember Keith Blackmore being so bad.
Revisado: 04-20-21
The writing is awkward and ham-handed. Not everything is “like” something else. People can just have rotten teeth that don’t have to be compared to countless other things.
Rotten teeth-we get it.
R.C. Bray is great as always.

Slurped
Revisado: 01-25-19
Unlistenable.
The narrator depicts a “watery voice” by making a slurping sound after each sentence. The character with the “watery voice” plays a major rule. The slurping ruins the book.
Isn’t there some editorial input on these recordings? Why didn’t someone stop her from doing this?

Historia
Will Robie escaped his small Gulf Coast hometown of Cantrell, Mississippi, after high school, severing all personal ties, and never looked back. Not once. Not until the unimaginable occurs. Unlike the missions Robie undertook in the service of his country, where his target was clearly defined, digging into his father's case only reveals more questions. Robie is drawn into the hidden underside of Cantrell, where he must face the unexpected and possibly deadly consequences of the long-ago choices made by father and son.

Truly Awful
Revisado: 02-04-16
David Baldacci once wrote pretty good books. Those days are long gone. I passed over this book until the star rating lured me in.
Implausible, inauthentic and accidentally intolerably misanthropic.
Never again.
