First, I’ve enjoyed Theodora Taylor’s books for years, and, in fact, have a quite a few of them. In past books I’ve liked the writing, story line, character development, and narrators, but this one, not so much. I really didn’t like Her Russian Bully at all. I could go into a lot of detail why I say this but let me just recap: I found the writing lack luster the characters not particularly likeable, and narrators mediocre at best. As I listened, I kept thinking that it’s just a tired rehash of the Russian bad boy/beast with little heart or energy her other books have had. And, what’s with he’s 23 and she’s 21 and he insists she call him “Daddy”, not to mention he’s a stone cold killer of people she knows. Nope, this book was not for me.

Enchanting and Heartbreaking Sublime Narration

A powerful and compelling story of the lives, loves, and heartbreaks of Collette, an artist, a vampire. Thoughtful and introspective, I was emotionally and intellectually captivated by her struggle with and discomfort of her immortal life as she awaits the arrival of the God of Endings. So often it put me in mind of my own contemplative musings…why am I here, is this life worth living, have I made a difference…and so on.
Not to discount Jacqueline Holland’s superb first novel, however I must say that Saskia Maarleveld’s work as narrator was superb. The lyrical use of her voice was often as powerful as the words she spoke. As a collaborative effort between the two it was brilliant.

First, let me say that I very much enjoyed the story...a fresh little spin on the age old struggle between misunderstanding and truth, among other things. Actually I liked the narrators' voice. What I didn't like was the fact that she produced a quick, sharp little "click" sound at the end of some words; a nasal issue, as I understand it. Unfortunately, I became so aware of it that it ruined my listening experience. I gave up.

I enjoyed the whole package...the storyline and the narrators (especially Bishop's snarkiness), Simply put, it was an A+ read. Good job Eden Summers, et al.

I enjoyed the story, and I thought Paul Brion did a good job narrating. Having said this, I didn't like the ending at all. I've listened to it several times to make sure my first impression wasn't coming from another source...you know, like having a cranky day. It wasn't. An ending wraps up the threads of the story. There's, hopefully, some sort of resolution; a conclusion. This isn't to be confused with answers to all questions/mysteries, or the whole piece being wrapped up in a tidy definitive bow, but rather providing some sort of summation, if you will. Dom ended almost mid sentence, it seemed. I found it dissatisfying.

I liked the story, but the narrator ruined it for me. Why? Well, her H voice and h voice were the same. So, it wasn't like a performance of Vampire Enforcer, but rather like a woman just plain reading it. The other thing I didn't like about her was the need to use screechy cartoonish voices for various female characters. Ugh.
Now, let me add, as a voice, I like hers, just not as a male character or as a pissy female. Sorry Bella Barton, you missed it on this one. Shoulda' Kindled it.
Rowan Hart, on the other hand, wrote a enjoyable vampire story.

I love Elizabeth Bear's stories. However, I had trouble with this one for a simple, yet important reason: The ad nauseum lengths of the inner monolog of Dr Jens became so annoying I took to skipping chapters. After a discourse or three on the pain she lives with, why am I listening to a regurgitation of the same issue again and again, oh and let's not forget, again. I guess what it comes down to is this not being a favorite Bear story. Is it enough to turn me away from this author? Absolutely not, but for me Machine gets a C-

OMG! I've never read, listened to, or experienced firsthand therapy as awful as this was. Janes Idea of a therapeutic approach to mental wellness was to browbeat her patients with questions, questions and more questions that she didn't leave room for an answer to before she was on to the next question. My favorite(awful) one was an accusatory "Don't you want to get well!?" Was this supposed to be some form of tough love? Also, she had so many unresolved issues herself, where was her therapist? I mean, come on! Sneaking around the home of a patient she's uncomfortable with, in the middle of the night? Huh? All in all, her approach was off putting, and I listened to the book in a perpetual state of frustration, no, make that annoyance.

By the time I finished the book by jumping ahead over and over, I was truly annoyed. Within several chapters this became a serious Christian book/story. Nothing about this aspect of it was mentioned in the writeup. Religion/Spirituality is an actual Audible category, allowing the reader to CHOOSE the subject, and this coupled with the heavy Christian tenor of the book left me feeling totally mislead. There's no difference between this and someone buying an Audible that's erotica with no mention made of content direction in the description.
The book was well written with decent performances, but as far as I'm concerned it's a lie of omission to not reveal subject matter such as this.

Let me say at the beginning of this little diatribe, that I have quite a few of this author’s Kindle edition books and have enjoyed all of them, and I know my comments here aren’t in keeping with the majority. However, this book was a major derailment for me. I like erotica…a lot, but it has to be offered up in a package of good writing, and I don’t mean grammatically correct. I’m two-thirds through the book and don’t know if I can finish. I mean, how many times, how many hours can the H-h muse to themselves how big his c___ is, how he’ll pound her, multitudes of orgasms, her wetness, and all the other simple words and terms of hot sex, which after a time becomes sophomoric? There are little to no plot-driven descriptive details that make sex scenes interesting and intriguing, rather it’s just page after page of the same words and terms, used almost like filler to increase the length. Nope, not for me this time.
