Historia
From blurry vision to crooked teeth, ACLs that tear at alarming rates and spines that seem to spend a lifetime falling apart, it's a curious thing that human beings have beaten the odds as a species. After all, we're the only survivors on our branch of the tree of life. Why is it that human mothers have such a life-endangering experience giving birth? And why are there entire medical specialties for teeth and feet? In this funny, wide-ranging and often surprising book, biologist Alex Bezzerides tells us just where we inherited our achy, brilliant bodies in the process of evolution.

Makes the fact of evolution at the same time more credible and more improbable, by telling how many adaptations, for example, were necessary for primates to go from quadrapeds to bipeds.

Historia
The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Historia
Growing up in Paris, the daughter of a German mother and an Irish father, Svenja O'Donnell knew little of her family's German past. In this transporting and illuminating audiobook, the award-winning journalist vividly reconstructs the story of her grandmother Inge's life from the rise of the Nazis through the brutal postwar years, from falling in love with a man who was sent to the Eastern Front just after she became pregnant with his child, to spearheading her family's flight as the Red Army closed in, her young daughter in tow.

Historia
Do you really want the crooked baby-kissers and fake news to tell you what your rights are? Wouldn’t you rather discover them for yourself? The founders fought tirelessly to guarantee these God-given rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. But let’s face it - the Bill of Rights is hard to understand. Its text is flowery and puzzling. It’s full of legal and political jargon.

Excellent History, but . . .
Revisado: 12-17-19
. . . this book goes into the sort of detail of each general and other high ranking participants that I know that, listening in my car, I'm not going to be able to keep track of, and won't remember. So I stopped listening. Not a fault of the author's nor of the narrator's. It's just not for me so much as an audio listen.

Historia
The search to find medicines is as old as disease, which is to say as old as the human race. Through serendipity - by chewing, brewing, and snorting - some Neolithic souls discovered opium, alcohol, snakeroot, juniper, frankincense, and other helpful substances. Ötzi the Iceman, the 5,000-year-old hunter frozen in the Italian Alps, was found to have whipworms in his intestines and Bronze Age medicine, a worm-killing birch fungus, knotted to his leggings.

Fascinating Non-fiction
Revisado: 02-18-18
What did you love best about The Drug Hunters?
Really interesting anecdotes and histories of various remedies. So many of the drugs we take for granted today are the products of lots of perseverance, lots of knowing a good thing when you see it (that can take a long time) and lots and LOTS of luck.
Who was your favorite character and why?
N/A
What does James Foster bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I gave the narration 5 stars because the narrator never got in the way of the text. He was interested, actually knew how to pronounce all of the words, and I never said to myself, "that was an interesting choice on the narrator's part." Which means, as I said, he read it well and lively, but let the text be the main event.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
"And you thought you already liked drugs!"
Any additional comments?
This did just what I think non-fiction audio books are supposed to do. I was entertained and educated at the same time. The stories are about the people who made the breakthroughs, not about the boring (lets face it) chemicals themselves.

A Little Too "Neato"
Revisado: 02-17-18
What did you like best about The Man of Legends? What did you like least?
Good concept, noble main character. What was off-putting for me was, this guy supposedly was the catalyst for every good idea over the last many hundred years. "Hey, Albert, there was a guy who imagined riding a light wave . . . " "Stop right there. I have to go and discover the theory of relativity." Steam engines--check. Renaissance painting--check. Rivets in Levi pants--check. On and on. Once I would have loved this heavy handed, muse-to-all story, but I haven't been in the seventh grade for a long time now.
Would you recommend The Man of Legends to your friends? Why or why not?
Not really. It's not a bad book, but there are a lot of better books out there.
What didn’t you like about full cast’s performance?
Pretty much everybody did a good job except the guy who did the voice of the lead, Will. He . . . thought he . . . needed to . . . pause every three to seven . . . words.
Was The Man of Legends worth the listening time?
Sure, why not. I listen to books when I'm driving. I drive a lot. I had this going at max speed on my Kindle, so I can't say I was savoring it. Still I wouldn't ask for my money back.
