Historia
Paul Jarvis left the corporate world when he realized that working in a high-pressure, high profile world was not his idea of success. In Company of One, Jarvis explains how you can find the right pathway to do the same, including planning how to set up your shop, determining your desired revenues, dealing with unexpected crises, keeping your key clients happy, and of course, doing all of this on your own. Company of One is a refreshingly new approach centered on staying small and avoiding growth, for any size business.

Completely Misleading Title
Revisado: 12-20-21
The title sounds great and the subject seems perfect except the author never delivers.
At best, this is a very general, you’ve read it all before, book about business.
The author uses almost all the major companies you’ve ever heard of as an example and talks about how they went on to great success using the techniques he’s talking about however they are all major companies who have a plethora of employees, department in teams to accomplish their goals.
That is not applicable to anyone who is a solo entrepreneur or looking to stay small.
If you’re here considering this because you want to run a company yourself and keep it small to just you and maybe a few outside consultant/contractors, then this is not the book you are looking for.
Don’t get me wrong every now and then the author will mention a company that is small but for the most part the examples are all around major corporations that are common household names.

Historia
Malcolm Gladwell, author of New York Times best sellers including Talking to Strangers and host of the podcast Revisionist History, uses original interviews, archival footage, and his trademark insight to weave together the stories of a Dutch genius and his homemade computer, a band of brothers in Central Alabama, a British psychopath, and pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard. As listeners hear these stories unfurl, Gladwell examines one of the greatest moral challenges in modern American history.

Book Meets NPR
Revisado: 07-09-21
The story was ok yet Malcolm’s other stories have captured my interest much more but this review is more about the format.
Overall I found this to be exactly like an NPR radio broadcast on par with This American Life or other well edited broadcast.
I think if I took a quiet listen and focused more the story would have pulled me in deep but like many audiobooks I listen while driving and the subtleties of the music, sounds and interviews are often lost on a more casual listen.
I am open to more in this format but right now prefer the traditional audiobooks a bit more.

Well Done
Revisado: 05-15-21
As a huge fan of ER I was a bit surprised at how little Julianna wrote about her time on the show yet it makes perfect sense when you remember this is a biography.
Ideally a biography gives the reader/listener a glimpse at what the person went through, how they were influenced and the joys and struggles they endured and this book covers that full on.
Without revealing a spoiler I will say her connection to Mark, her dentist, was a joy to hear. ❤️

When Ari Meisel and Nick Sonnenberg launched their high-end virtual assistant (VA) company, Less Doing™, they changed the culture of start-ups forever, effectively debunking the gospel that every new venture requires months of preplanning and a hefty investment of capital. A business born from scribbled notes on a cocktail napkin during dinner was an up-and-running concern less than 24 hours later, ingeniously brought to life with the help of free, readily available digital tools and apps and no outlay of cash.

Listened Then Bought The Book
Revisado: 02-26-21
After listening to this book I had to order a physical version because the insights Daniel shared are worthy of study.
There’s a lot in here and I feel it’s important to spend time highlighting, taking notes and then studying the material as a listen just wasn’t enough.
This is one of those books I might listen to again as it’s much like a long Ted Talk or workshop with many nuggets that get you to think differently.

Jack Ma’s Words From Quotes, Interviews & Presentations
Revisado: 01-17-21
Someone basically took segments of Jack Ma speaking and summarized it into this book.
You don’t get full chapters expanding on an idea or theme but instead sometimes short quotes out together.
Clearly Mr Ma is brilliant and has huge amounts of knowledge but this audio book unfortunately didn’t provide what I was seeking.

Now it can be told! The true, behind-the-scenes story of Casablanca Records, from an eyewitness to the excess and insanity. Casablanca was not a product of the 1970s, it was the 1970s. From 1974 to 1980, the landscape of American culture was a banquet of hedonism and self-indulgence, and no person or company in that era was more emblematic of the times than Casablanca Records and its magnetic founder, Neil Bogart.

A KISS Fan From The 70s
Revisado: 12-20-20
If I wasn’t a huge KISS fan from the 70s I never would have listened to more than 20 minutes of the book.
But I was and so I stuck with it until the end.
You’ll gain some insights into the behind the scenes of KISS, Donna Summer, The Village People and many others.
You’ll hear about the excessive drug use, some details of the record business and that Neil Bogart had a vision and commitment to grow a company but the inability to really lead one to amazing heights. Let’s face it, it’s a tough business.

Beyond Comes Alive
Revisado: 11-22-20
Like so many fans my first exposure to Peter was Frampton Comes Alive.
I quickly bought his first three solo albums and to this day they still touch me very deeply. The deep cuts from those original albums have soul touching words and music.
This book helps bring them even deeper with some backstory to many of the actual songs but more so to the writer/performer.
Peter’s talent was rare at a very early age and combine that with being in the right place at the right time by connecting with nearly everyone who was or soon to be become, legends.
I’m grateful to have learned so much about someone I’ve appreciated for over 40 years.

John Lewis was an extremely strong man. To stand up with faith in his heart against unbelievable hate is just beyond my understanding yet this book points to a way to walk that same path.
If we all did just 10% of what he describes the world would be 100% better.
