Great Narration - The writing captivated me till the last 2 hours and the ending was… an ending

It wasn’t my favorite and I guesses the killer around 35% in but then it just felt like the most chaotic, and not in the organized intentional way, manhunt going in so many directions with a very bland ending and the MMC making literally every single thing about him having one of the most insane victim complex I’ve seen portrayed in a book (and one that would have annoyed TF out of me if I physically read it). While he did experience trauma, and lots of it, it felt like he was constantly vying for attention. He almost came off more as the pretentious one of the group by the end of it. Doing a lot for self serving interests or glory.

The ending was also just really rushed and full of such random chaos but it also felt like so many things were introduced that I would have been more interested in if the author followed those paths rather than the one taken.

The narrator, however, is the reason this is getting almost a 4 and not closer to a 3. I loved him in Crazy Ex Girlfriend and the fact he is an award winning broadway actor SHOWS in his voice work! I’ll happily listen to anything by him!

Big WTF from me over here

I physically could not finish this book at chapter 13. I REALLY tried and I just… I’m sorry, I couldn’t. I feel like this book took a turn for the worst and it feels so elementary, predictable and also breaking any rule set for the magic/fantasy lore that they made and it just feels a bit immature in the way it all just “works out” for them.

A lot of world building

I loved the voice acting but I would have definitely had a hard time finishing if I was reading. A lot of names to remember and a lot to try to go back and forth between to remember who was who in the last half of the book. I wish there was more chemistry with FMC and MMC but I am enjoying listening to the series thus far.

I ugly cried so hard at this because it captured my entire heart

Wow this book will RUIN you 😭 the emotional depths of this will either really resonate with you or give you so much visibility on what many struggle with, especially post pandemic. I honestly am at a loss for words to describe how beautifully tragic this story was. This novel, their love, left a permanent imprint on my soul. I didn’t realize I could be this broken by a book by sure enough, I dropped to the floor and lost it more than once.

Roman. Empire. Book.

Went in knowing nothing

And really enjoyed the storyline and am excited for book two! I didn’t expect it to be a reverse harem and I love that it went that route and how it got there. I think there is also quite a bit of depth in the world-building and lore and I’m quite impressed by that! Excited for book 2!

Love the emotion behind Kate Stewart’s writing. Her novels always invoke a slew of emotions but leave me feeling soft and fuzzy after; this one kept in line with those exact feelings. Can’t believe I waited so long to listen to this gem!
