Very useful concise
Revisado: 06-13-23
Excellent summary for someone like me who knew very little about the topic. Strong presentation of important trends, without a lot of detail that wouldn’t fit in a short book, over the span of centuries. I feel like I got the essence of Balkan history.

Historia
The prize-winning and best-selling author of Say Nothing presents a grand, devastating portrait of three generations of the Sackler family, famed for their philanthropy, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was destroyed by OxyContin. Empire of Pain is a masterpiece of narrative reporting and writing, exhaustively documented and ferociously compelling.

A must-read

Important story. Well written. Everyone should read this detailed, spell-binding account of the role of the Sackler family in the opioid crisis. The complicit role of the FDA is especially shocking.

Historia
McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

A sympathetic portrait

Refreshing to see a full-throated sympathetic treatment of this great man, without the usual sniping about his curmudgeonliness. Together with biographies of the other Founders, this helps provide a balanced, nuanced portrait of those amazing years when our country came into being.

Historia
In this stirring audiobook, David McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence, when the whole American cause was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed and the noble ideals of the Declaration would have amounted to little more than words on paper.

Fresh and enjoyable
Revisado: 12-17-20
I was skeptical at first about a re-visiting of such well-trodden ground, but McCullough finds fresh details and stories that will be new to armchair history buffs like me. It’s refreshing to see such an unvarnished look at the fiasco in Long Island and New York. I liked the portraits of Washington’s top lieutenants like Greene, Knox, Reed, and Lee. Best of all, McCullough writes a gripping, detailed page-turner of an account of the events of that crucial year. Every American should enjoy this book.
