Historia
In Queen's Bench Courtroom Number Seven, famous author Abraham Cady stands trial. In his book The Holocaust - born of the terrible revelation that the Jadwiga Concentration camp was the site of his family's extermination - Cady shook the consciousness of the human race. He also named eminent surgeon Sir Adam Kelno as one of Jadwiga's most sadistic inmate/doctors. Kelno has denied this and brought furious charges. Now unfolds Leon Uris' riveting courtroom drama - one of the great fictional trials of the century.

Good Story But....
Revisado: 06-28-19
I enjoyed the read but John Lee's take on an American accent was so bad that it was painful to listen to. I found myself dreading the chapters that the Cady's would make an appearance. Other than that it was a fascinating look into some very grey areas around the Holocaust.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

I knew of "The Troubles" and thought I had a good understanding of what happened. This brought so much depth and background to the story that I realize now how little I knew. Tremendous humanizing portrait of those that were knee deep involved. Highly recommend.

Historia
The tale begins in Dark Age Britain, a land where Arthur has been banished and Merlin has disappeared, where a child-king sits unprotected on the throne, where religion vies with magic for the souls of the people. It is to this desperate land that Arthur returns, a man at once utterly human and truly heroic: a man of honor, loyalty, and amazing valor; a man who loves Guinevere more passionately than he should; a man whose life is at once tragic and triumphant.

Don't Give Up on this Book
Revisado: 11-30-18
I'm glad I read some of the other comments before I purchased and listened to this book. Even with the comments I almost punted but I am extremely happy I stuck with it. Tremendous story and performance are well worth the slow start. Just finished book two of the series and am about to start part three. Can't recommend this highly enough.

Historia
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

Two Books

The first half of the book had me on the edge of my seat. The second half was essentially It 2 with a less tough bad guy. I would say I still enjoyed it, particularly Will Patton's narration but Mr. King has done better.

Historia
By January 1968, despite an influx of half a million American troops, the fighting in Vietnam seemed to be at a stalemate. Yet General William Westmoreland, commander of American forces, announced a new phase of the war in which "the end begins to come into view". The North Vietnamese had different ideas. In mid-1967, the leadership in Hanoi had started planning an offensive intended to win the war in a single stroke.

Well Rounded
Revisado: 08-17-17
I spent three weeks in Vietnam last year, including a couple of days in Hue, and I wish I had listened to this book before my trip. I loved that the author looked at this from all sides. History is usually read from a one-sided view and this gives a much fuller perspective. I found Joe Barrett's narration engaging and felt he gave a good consistent performance throughout.

Historia
On Detective Matt Jones's first night working Homicide in LA, he's called to investigate a particularly violent murder case: a man has been gunned down in a parking lot off Hollywood Boulevard, his bullet-riddled body immediately pegged as the work of a serial robber who has been haunting the Strip for months.

Disappointing
Revisado: 06-30-17
An interesting story spiraled out of control to the point of absurdity. First off I'd like to say I have no problem with Mr. Ellis' descriptive writing style. What I didn't like was his character development and/or creation. Nearly everyone in this book defaults to hating each other within seconds of meeting. It just doesn't ring true. Then the twists and turns just became over the top. In the end I just felt that the characters didn't act like real people.

Historia
Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space. Among these problem solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation.

Coulda Shoulda
Revisado: 03-06-17
I was born in Hampton, Virginia in 1959. My father was stationed at Langley at the time and worked peripherally on the space program. I would love to have been able to pick his brain on the subject but unfortunately he passed several years ago. It was with that backdrop that I picked up this with great enthusiasm. I was hoping that this story would give these women the rich treatment they deserve but it falls short. It just feels like someone reading a text book to me and you never really get to fully know these women. You find out what happened to them and the events that shaped their lives but you never really get to know them, not really. Don't get me wrong, as a historical text it delves into fascinating and very important issues but it just never really lives up to what it could have been.

Tremendous!!!
Revisado: 10-11-16
I'm more of a child of the 60s and 70s than I am of the 80s but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I listen to audio books to and from work and I found myself almost disappointed when I reached my destination. I binge listened to the last two hours of the book at home, something I never do. I thought the story would be pretty predictable after the first few chapters but I figured it was written with youthful readers in mind but I was wrong. There were enough twists and unexpected events to keep me guessing. Great fun!

Not Your Typical Hero
Revisado: 10-21-15
If you are looking for the hero in your thrillers to solve most of his problems with this fists you are in the wrong place. If you are seeking a look behind the scenes of real diplomacy you are right where you should be. I loved Todd Moss' opening effort "The Golden Hour". This one is better. The story revolves around a fictional pseudo-dictator and his attempts to fix his country's (Zimbabwe) election to remain in power. It's not hard to see a little bit of Robert Mugabe in Winston Tinotenda. As with his first Judd Ryker novel, Moss gives us a fascinating look at the political machine at work.
I was somewhat critical of Piter Marek's narration of "The Golden Hour" thinking that he robbed the story of some of its drama at critical times. This is a much better effort by Marek. He does an excellent job with not only the different accents but with the consistency of his voices.
I am really looking forward to the third installment of this series. Hopefully Mr. Moss doesn't keep us waiting too long.

Historia
In the late 1890s, Edmund Dene Morel, a young British shipping company agent, noticed something strange about the cargoes of his company's ships as they arrived from and departed for the Congo. Incoming ships were crammed with valuable ivory and rubber. Outbound ships carried little more than soldiers and firearms. Correctly concluding that only slave labor could account for these cargoes, Morel almost singlehandedly made this slave-labor regime the premier human rights story in the world.

Fascinating Subject Matter
Revisado: 05-20-15
I found the topic fascinating and enlightening but the narration by Geoffrey Howard was a bit dry making it come off as the reading of a high school textbook. At first I thought it might be the writing but then I determined it was the narrator and his delivery. The late Edward Herrmann would have been able to deliver much more drama into the narrative. In addition, the editing of the recording was terrible. 30 or 40 times the narration repeated itself with previously read lines.
That being said, overall I really enjoyed the book. It's a part of history I didn't know and the book really touched on the pulse of the times. As the book states, history is written by the victors so the rape and torture of the Dark Continent did not make it into any of the textbooks of my youth. If you can put aside the editing issues and the dry narration it's work your time. Adam Hochschild did his part. My suggestion would be to purchase the book and read it if you can.
