Historia
Who formed the first literate society? Who invented our modern ideas of democracy and free market capitalism? The Scots. As historian and author Arthur Herman reveals, in the 18th and 19th centuries Scotland made crucial contributions to science, philosophy, literature, education, medicine, commerce, and politics - contributions that have formed and nurtured the modern West ever since. This book is not just about Scotland: it is an exciting account of the origins of the modern world.

Enlightening
Revisado: 03-13-25
The title and thesis are a strong proclamation, which makes it initially intriguing. However, the writing and March through time kept my attention until the end. Wonderful text to expand one’s understanding of the world and the lasting impact of the Scots.

Historia
Since the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision in 2015, sexual identity has dominated both public discourse and cultural trends — yet no historical phenomenon is its own cause. From Augustine to Marx, various views and perspectives have contributed to the modern understanding of the self.

If you desire to make sense of our current societal and political environment, this book is vital. Trueman is concise, contextual, and chronological in his writing. He applies his research and historical knowledge to construct a timeline of the rise of the modern self, and he also does a wonderful job narrating his work.

Historia
This story is about a young soldier, Henry Fleming, fighting in the American Civil War. It is a vivid and stark portrayal of war on the human psyche, interspersed with symbolic imagery and biblical metaphors. The story realistically portrays the young soldier's physical and psychological struggles after fleeing from his first encounter with a battle. He returns to his regiment to become a strong soldier and even taking on the task of the flag bearer in the final battle.

Good narration, but not for this book
Revisado: 12-27-18
The narrator’s tone would be more enjoyable in a different type of story. Scott has a “radio” voice which doesn’t fit with the overarching fear and tumult of Fleming’s experiences.
