Too much stage setting, not enough plot
Revisado: 12-05-24
I know it’s hard to write a novel, but this author wrote way too much book with very little reward . It is thick with scene descriptions and thin on plot. Every time someone enters a room, the listener must hear every detail of the setting and every word of the dialogue. No summaries, even when the scene doesn’t further the plot. Actually I’m several hours in and still haven’t detected a plot. This book just seems like a mashup of several popular genres. Not worth your time unless you like to absently listen to British accents without missing anything.

Slow and formulaic but harmless
Revisado: 03-20-24
I picked this book because I enjoy the narrator, and she did not disappoint. However, the story… not so much. Anyone who has ever explored this genre could predict the ending from the start. I fast forwarded through the middle of every chapter and didn’t miss anything. But if you like British accents, this won’t hurt you.

Historia
In September 1883, a small town in the South Australian outback huddles under strange, vivid sunsets. Six-year-old Denny Wallace has gone missing during a dust storm, and the entire community is caught up in the search for him. As they scour the desert and mountains for the lost child, the residents of Fairly—newlyweds, farmers, mothers, indigenous trackers, cameleers, children, artists, schoolteachers, widows, maids, policemen—confront their relationships, both with one another and with the landscape they inhabit.

Mrs Dalloway in the Outback
Revisado: 12-15-23
This novel is really an impressionistic painting. A moment in time captured with metaphors in a lovely accent. No plot, just portraits. Gently sedating.

The editor should be fired
Revisado: 11-12-23
If there was editing, it was poor. The story was interesting, but it just wouldn’t end. Life after life, the two characters made so little progress. The poor narrator struggled with a Portuguese male accent through thousands of lives, hundreds of deaths and dozens of false endings. The payoff was better than I was fearing, but mostly a relief.

Only if you have time to waste

I only finished it because I needed something to get me through workouts, and I kept forgetting to download something else. The story was borrowed from every other story like this. But the narration was very good.

Strange stilted narration
Revisado: 06-01-23
Be sure to listen to the sample all the way through. I couldn’t bear the strange pauses and breaks mid sentence. Story was overwrought too. As an original audible member and avid listener, I can’t believe this was a bestseller.

So so painfully slow
Revisado: 05-13-22
I wanted to like this book because it was my only listen option. But nothing I mean nothing happens until about 2/3 of the way through. Just overwrought detailed descriptions of nothing. You could easily skip to midway and pick up the slim plot thread. There are no twists at the end. So glad it’s over.

Emmeline lives on a remote island with her father, who teaches her about the natural world through her senses. What he won’t explain are the mysterious scents stored in glass bottles that line the walls of their cabin, or the origin of the machine that creates them. As Emmeline grows, however, so too does her curiosity, until one day the unforeseen happens, and Emmeline is vaulted out into the real world—a place of love, betrayal, ambition, and revenge. To understand her past, Emmeline must unlock the clues to her identity.

If you hate books that seek to prove a character has suffered a hard childhood by killing off her favorite pet, skip this one. And if you hate books that are overwrought in a poor attempt at magical realism, definitely skip this one.
