Historia
Cast out of the royal court by Eleanor of Aquitaine, deemed too coarse and rough-hewn for marriage or courtly life, seventeen-year-old Marie de France is sent to England to be the new prioress of an impoverished abbey, its nuns on the brink of starvation and beset by disease. At first taken aback by the severity of her new life, Marie finds focus and love in collective life with her singular and mercurial sisters. In this crucible, Marie steadily supplants her desire for family, for her homeland, for the passions of her youth with something new to her.

Starts interesting...
Revisado: 02-17-24
It feels flat and undeveloped. While the premise, time period, and characters start promisingly enough there is a one dimensionality that is unsatisfying. The narrator had some good moments, but then cringeworthy ones shortly after. Life is too short to slog through a book I am barely enjoying. Back to my wish list to find something more captivating.....

Really, really enjoyed this
Revisado: 08-29-23
There are soooo many mediocre books around here, and therefore such a delight to encounter a very good writer, interesting characters, and wonderful narration. Sometimes just one of these can ruin the whole thing, and I just don't have it in me to deal with a book that feels like a slogging chore. This was not either slogging or a chore. I looked forward to it, I appreciated the layers of human experiences explored (without it being too explicit or gruesome) I am also excited to find a very good writer, and have added most of her books to my wish list. Thoroughly enjoyed, thank you!!

Some of the WORST writing I've read in a long time
Revisado: 03-03-23
I really don't get the glowing reviews. This was unbearable - the writing astonishingly bad.
This author is forever off of my wish list. To those that enjoyed, I'm glad it gave you pleasure. Just not for me.

Masterful
Revisado: 02-18-23
I have new favorites - a new favorite author and two beyond-phenomenal narrators. Wow I have so much respect for truly wonderful writing. So many books on here, some with 4.5 stars, are abysmally written. Mr. Edward Carey is an exceptionally brilliant writer - in creativity, in character development, in artistry. That itself is a joy to experience brilliant writing. So much so that I ventured into a genre that I otherwise would not have, just because it was so well done. And these two narrators - some of the best I have ever had the joy to listen to - (and as we know a great book can be ruined by even mediocre narration) These two - Ben Allen and Bea Holland bring this to life with equal creativity, character development, artistry. Bravo to everyone!!!

One of my favorites from Mr. Irving
Revisado: 12-29-22
I love many of John Irving's books, and this is one of them. (when I love them, I really love them, when I don't, I really don't). He has a wonderful way of making fun at the ridiculousness of us humans while also taking our plights seriously. This is another sprawling farcical escapade - perhaps the most farcical of all- so well written, so astute in detailed observations, each character is wonderfully flawed and beautiful with a real sense of what creates both the flaws and the beauty and all this in a powerful punch of humor. I am often the only one NOT laughing at a comedy and this book had me laughing out loud.
I am glad I stuck with it - I almost gave up a few times at the beginning - the narration at first was painful to listen to but after a while the narrator settled down and did a wonderful job - it just took him a bit to settle into the characters and the rhythms of Irvings dialogues and descriptions.
Another thank you to Mr. Irving - I read many of your books 30 years ago, deeply impacted by Garp, Cider House, Hotel New Hampshire, and this one. I am revisiting them from the person I am today, able to enjoy and marvel at the creativity and the creations in quite a different way. Again, I thank you. And I am so grateful you are here.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

lacking depth and nuance
Revisado: 12-08-22
I really wanted to like this, to dive in and be mesmerized and moved. Instead I was met with a very familiar story of regret and despair, without much insight and self reflection beyond the surface. I am going to return this one, sadly.

Mariana Andros is a brilliant but troubled group therapist who becomes fixated on The Maidens when one member, a friend of Mariana’s niece Zoe, is found murdered in Cambridge. Mariana, who was once herself a student at the university, quickly suspects that behind the idyllic beauty of the spires and turrets, and beneath the ancient traditions, lies something sinister. And she becomes convinced that, despite his alibi, Edward Fosca is guilty of the murder. But why would the professor target one of his students?

The writing is so subpar
Revisado: 11-28-22
I really couldn't go that far into this due to the poor, simplistic, undeveloped writing and character development. I had been excited to read this and The Silent Patient but now I really can't imagine the writing can be that much better in the other one. For those that enjoyed this - I am glad.

Beautiful, deep, moving,
Revisado: 11-27-22
I am new to Ms. O' Farrell's work, and I just love the way she writes - poetic, simple, yet deep and profound. She hits all the notes for me. (my next audible book I couldn't get further than 10 min because the writing was so poor and flabby in comparison). I truly enjoyed this story but I did not, not, not enjoy the narrator. She felt young and inexperienced to navigate the bigness of the prose. I am glad I didn't give up, but there were many moments I thought Ms. Potter was not cast well for this endeavor. Enjoy a remarkable ride!

Ruth Cole is a complex, often self-contradictory character — a "difficult" woman. Her story is told in three parts, each focusing on a crucial time in her life. When we first meet her, Ruth is only four. The second window into Ruth's life opens when she is an unmarried woman whose personal life is not nearly as successful as her literary career. The novel closes in the autumn of 1995, when Ruth is a 41-year-old widow and mother — and about to fall in love for the first time.

Love Irving, couldn't bear George
Revisado: 06-03-22
The narration was untenable, John Irving is one my most favorite writers and the narrator just killed the life out of this book. Everything was suspenseful and filled with surprise and wonder with the most basic of words = he picked up the suitcase, said as if he discovered a new planet. Sorry Mr. Irving, I had to return this.

Unbearable
Revisado: 03-07-22
While I was interested in the story, and the shifting between timelines of the lives of two women, the narration was simply the worst I've ever heard. She did not understand the assignment. Simple statements like "the chair in the corner" was said with pause, affect, and accusation - slowing down, adding suspense where none is needed, and then with a tone of disbelief - oh that chair in the corner! And the writing is so juvenile. I only listened to 1/4 and heard "the warmth of the fire" at least 10 times. Goodness!! (especially brutal since I had just finished the astonishingly magnificent in all ways, especially the writing and narration, of Diane Setterfield's "Once Upon A River", narrated by the impossibly talented Juliet Stevenson.
