Returning to her hometown after the funeral of her parents, writer Erica Falck finds a community on the brink of tragedy. The death of her childhood friend, Alex, is just the beginning. Her wrists slashed, her body frozen in an ice cold bath, it seems that she has taken her own life. While her interest grows to an obsession, local detective Patrik Hedstrom is following his own suspicions about the case.

Historia
Carl Mørck used to be one of Denmark’s best homicide detectives. Then a hail of bullets destroyed the lives of two fellow cops, and Carl - who didn’t draw his weapon - blames himself. So a promotion is the last thing he expects. But Department Q is a department of one, and Carl’s got only a stack of cold cases for company. His colleagues snicker, but Carl may have the last laugh, because one file keeps nagging at him: A liberal politician vanished five years earlier and is presumed dead. But she isn’t dead...yet.

Excellent listen. Nordic Noir at its best
Revisado: 04-29-23
This is a fantastic story and excellently narrated. I think this not so really captured the spirit of the Nordic Noir genre with a flawed and sarcastic protagonist you grow to love and a twisted family of villains out for revenge. The narrator is excellent.

Historia
Already widowed by the age of 40, Ilka Nichols Jensen, a school portrait photographer, leads a modest, regimented, and uneventful life in Copenhagen. And he's left her something in his will: his funeral home. In Racine, Wisconsin. Clinging to this last shred of communication from the father she hasn't heard from since childhood, Ilka makes an uncharacteristically rash decision and jumps on a plane to Wisconsin.

Awful narrator
Revisado: 10-10-22
I’m sure the storyline is great, but I could not listen to the robotic, terrible narrator. I tried to get into the book, but the narrator was just not for me.

Historia
Set in the 1970s in a run-down, rainy, industrial town, Jo Nesbo's Macbeth centers around a police force struggling to shed an incessant drug problem. Duncan, chief of police, is idealistic and visionary, a dream to the townspeople but a nightmare for criminals. The drug trade is ruled by two drug lords, one of whom - a master of manipulation named Hecate - has connections with the highest in power and plans to use them to get his way.

A good listen, for the most part
Revisado: 03-29-22
In the beginning, the narrator’s accent was a challenge for me to understand. But I got in the groove with him soon enough. It also wasn’t clear to me where this was supposed to take place, but perhaps that was the point. Not my favorite Jo Nesbø book, but a good listen.

Not for the faint at heart
Revisado: 05-24-21
This is a very good book but it does contain extremely graphic accounts of child rape and sexual abuse. Had I known how truly disturbing and descriptive it was on the subject, I likely would have passed on the title. So please bear that in mind.
However, the story was truly gripping and took many twists and turns that kept me engaged and wanting to know how it ends.

Historia
A psychopath is terrorizing Copenhagen. His calling card is a “chestnut man” - a handmade doll made of matchsticks and two chestnuts - which he leaves at each bloody crime scene. Examining the dolls, forensics makes a shocking discovery - a fingerprint belonging to a young girl, a government minister’s daughter who had been kidnapped and murdered a year ago. A tragic coincidence - or something more twisted? To save innocent lives, a pair of detectives must put aside their differences to piece together the Chestnut Man’s gruesome clues.
