Historia
Midlands police chase a serial killer who inflicts death by the new urban weapon of choice. Given the targets seem enveloped in love affairs and deceitful liaisons, Chief Inspector Gavin Roscoe suspects a motive of jealousy and revenge. But as the number of victims increases, the connection between them wears thin. Is it really a broken heart holding the crossbow? And if it's not some crazed Cupid, who has their finger on the trigger? Plucky Detective Sergeant Sunita Roy doesn't think they are looking in the right places. Yet without evidence, her theory won't hold water.

This book left me disappointed. The ending seemed hurried and poorly trying to tie the killer to the police theories as to why they did it. I'll not recommend this to friends and family.

Historia
It was summer in the mountains when five small children vanished from their nursery school picnic. The heat was stifling that day, the tinkle of an ice-cream van in the air.... Three-and-a-half years later, in the dead of winter, the children are returned to their families...one by one. All except for Ivy - the granddaughter of Homicide Detective Kate Wakeland. The other four children say Ivy is dead.

Nothing racist! Ignor that reviewer's comment
Revisado: 03-05-25
The accents that the narrator uses do leave something to be desired, but I'd not think trying to distinguish one character voice from another is racist. Challenging for any narrator I would guess, but well done here. My biggest complaint would be - too many syllables in the word no. LOL
Overall, a good book, read with a significant Australian accent.

Historia
DCI Harry Grimm is still grappling with the Yorkshire Dales custom of eating cheese with cake. But the seasoned big-city cop has more than enough experience getting pulled out of bed in the middle of the night for the grisliest crimes. So the gruesome early-hour discovery of a woman’s savaged remains on the bleakly beautiful terrain has the detective keen to slam an ugly killer behind bars. But when the prime suspect goes missing and Grimm reworks the scene, he fears he sees signs of meticulous military planning and a culprit with a long list of victims.

disappointing, but had to hear it
Revisado: 12-12-24
I knowingly bought and listened to book 6 of the series even after reading the reviews. I have to agree with the majority that the reader in this last installment was very disappointing. I think he litteraly pinched his nose for General Sanderson's unique (in the readers mind) voice. Not at all the confident and commanding sounding voice that John David Farrell created in the first 5 books. Daniel Petrovich also not what I had become used to and looked forward to hearing again from such a scary character. The story continues to be a good read or listen to though.

I just can't
Revisado: 09-24-24
I've tried. The fluctuations in volume and having to rewind repeatedly to hear what is said at such a low volume won out. I just can't finish it. I tried, but really, for me anyway, the story just couldn't keep me kinterested to the point of that frustration.

Detective Matt Ballard may have retired but there's still plenty going on in the fens to keep him busy. Someone trashes an old lady's garden and daubs her isolated cottage with hateful graffiti. Emilia Swain seems to be totally harmless, so why is she being targeted?

BOOOO
Revisado: 05-03-24
I couldn't wait for it to be finished. It was nothing like the other books by Joy Ellis that I have lstened to. Sadly I didn't read the reviews until I had it in my library. I was hopeful the ending would justify my time invested. Even the performance was only mediocre in places. The ending is terrible and as someone has mentioned in their own review very abrupt and leaving you thinking the author was even ready for it to be finished. I would not recommend this book.

So little to like
Revisado: 02-25-24
A sexist, racist, and dirty cop. I kept hoping for some redemption, but the main character is too slimy to like. I realize it was a different time, and 40 years later we're a different society, but a dirtbag cop from any time period is still unlikable.

Bring back MacLeod Andrews
Revisado: 02-18-24
Lots of bad reviews for the narrator. They cannot all be wrong. Horrible seems accurate. Sadly the reader (Bronson Pinchot) did not listen to previous character developments. The good natured, light hearted banter between Nils and his friend Jameson White is painful to listen to in this fourth book. Jameson now sounds like a gangster toughie. The lines can clearly be read with the same jovial comebacks and interaction as in earlier books, but Mr. Pinchot ruins a fun sidekick to Nils and his team by reading the lines with an almost threatening tone. As someone else reviewed, “MacLeod Andrews, the narrator of the first three books in this series was excellent.” ZERO stars for the performance

Historia
The local cops haven't seen anything like this, but Jesse's L.A. past has made him all too familiar with floaters. This girl hadn't committed suicide; she hadn't been drowned; she'd been shot and dumped, discarded like trash. Before long it becomes clear that she had a taste for the wild life; and her own parents can't be bothered to report her missing, or even admit that she once was a child of theirs. All Jesse has to go on is a young man's school ring on a gold chain, and a hunch or two.

He said - she said - they all said
Revisado: 01-27-24
The story is good enough, but the narration is flat and all the "he said", "she said", "so-and-so" saids is very annoying. I guess blame that on the author? There never seems to be punctuation or voice inflection though. A question by Jesse is ended with a flat monotone "Jesse said". I listened to it all the way through, but it was hard to finish.
