Nona “Peaches” Davenport, abandoned by the man she loved and betrayed by family, left her Natchez, Mississippi, home fifteen years ago and never looked back. She’s forged a promising future in Chicago as a professor of African American Studies. Nona even finds her once-closed heart persuaded by a new love. But that’s all shaken when her father’s death forces her to return to everything she’s tried to forget.

Karla Bell and I are not friends. We don’t even like each other. But when she gets tangled up in a murder investigation, I agree to help her stitch together the clues and find the real killer. I’m not doing it to help Karla. I’m doing it because if Karla goes down for a murder she didn’t commit, people I do care about will suffer, and the real killer will get away with murder. Karla isn’t easy to work with. She needles me with backhanded compliments and snarky wisecracks, until my patience is thinner than a strand of frayed yarn.

Mysticism turns to mystery when the fortune teller predicts her own murder. When the finger of suspicion points at someone close to me, I’m determined to clear their name by finding the real killer. Was the fortune teller’s tragic fate really in the cards, or did her secret identity and troubled past catch up with her? Were her psychic powers real or was she a crafty con artist? With a little help from my friends, I predict we can find the real killer before the wrong person takes the blame.
