exceeded expectations!
Revisado: 03-01-25
What a great story, characters were genuine and relatable, witty writing, funny, sad and frustrating story but ultimately uplifting. I loved every minute of this read and bought three more of the authors titles as soon as I finished it!

Repetitive vocab and irritating narrator
Revisado: 04-23-24
This story is pretty interesting, but completely overshadowed by uncreative vocabulary and the narrator's harsh voice. I won't buy another audiobook with Angela Dawes as narrator after having suffered through two of them in a row.
As for the story, I wish Nora Roberts could find a synonym for " need". Need and greed get a workout in this book, and it becomes almost comical --like the date that brings flowers every single time. Too much repetition, not enough subtle artistry with the romantic scenes. Maybe Nora is bored with herself, but she missed the mark with this series.

Shallow and inane
Revisado: 01-03-24
A protagonist whose life is devoted to hair, makeup and photos of herself as a washed up ex-model influencer has no redeeming qualities that endear her to the reader. Her reaction to the proposal that launched the imploding marriage storyline? "I had my next act!" Wow. This book was worse than having someone read People magazine aloud. No thanks.

Great for insomniacs
Revisado: 02-08-23
This is a perfect story to illustrate the importance of show, don't tell. A Widow Redefined reads like a report, and is just as interesting. There is no showing to be found here, just a monotonous listing of what happens such as her son, eating a tortilla chip with salsa. No descriptions, no details to give context or color, just a list of things that happened. The bland narration does nothing to elevate the story. Bored out of my mind here, so this one goes back.

Boring
Revisado: 11-02-22
When does the story start? I couldn't find a plot anywhere--just a narration of a midwife's days at work. The marathon was fine but overall, I couldn't get invested at all. Couldn't finish this one.

Writing and narration are awful
Revisado: 10-23-22
Could not go past chapter 2 and only then because I was driving. Just flat writing and rote narration. I can't comment on the story as I couldn't make it far enough into this one to tell if the plot was any better than the other elements. No thanks.

Great story, only a couple of disappointments
Revisado: 01-16-22
I love Louise Penney. The entire Inspector Gamache series is at the top of my favorites list. This was definitely a different Louise Penney read with Hillary's input. The story clearly belonged to Hillary, and was fascinating. It took me a bit to adjust, but I loved this book. It was spine tingling without being gory. I cared about the characters and was completely surprised when the good "guys" were sorted out from the bad "guys". I did not want it to end, thus relished the somewhat prolonged denouement. It was like cooling down after a vigorous workout.
I only had two complaints. When Gamache had his cameo, I needed to hear his lovely voice! Hearing him voiced by the narrator was jarring. And MRI is a magnetic device, not a radioactive one. Both of those glitches broke my concentration and had me completely off the story so that I had to rewind and listen again to know what was happening.
I still give this 5 stars as it was an excellent, though sobering, adventure.

While avoiding the tabloids and pretending she’s just fine, she’s crumbling inside. Zennie’s breakup is no big loss. Although the world insists she pair up, she’d rather be surfing. Robotic narration ruins this story
Revisado: 09-01-20
To be fair, I don't know whether this is a good story or not. The mechanical narration was so off-putting I could not get into the spirit of it. Not only was the reading stilted and overly enunciated-how can the simple word "to" be so annoying?-it was read so fast I thought the narrator must have somewhere to go. I normally have vivid visuals while listening to a book. The visuals evoked by this reading were animated-like a cartoon-because that's exactly how the soundtrack sounded. I couldn't finish it. I'm not a quitter, so I persisted for a while, then realized the book I was reading for relaxation was anything but. I don't need to pay to be annoyed! Putting it down and moving on.

Show, don't tell
Revisado: 01-04-20
The story here was a good one, with characters that mostly drew me in. But the telling of it was lacking power. It would have been easy to make a thrilling story of this material, but the writing smacks of a report- all telling, no showing. I did love the narrator's Irish accent. Well done there! Overall, an enjoyable read but falling short of its potential.
