Historia
Indie-rock icon Aimee Mann is well acquainted with trauma and the transformative act of using it as a basis for artistic expression, but that doesn’t mean that she knows how or why it works. Mann goes on a journey of discovery to better understand the link between damage and why what we do with it matters.

Truly is straw into gold
Revisado: 01-09-23
Individually, Mann’s guests and she discuss some of the effects of trauma and dysfunction in childhood (never graphically) and how each has transformed, healed or recognized how these experiences have entered or been accepted and effectively communicated through creative expression. It is an affirmation that, no matter what the experience, we all belong and no one is truly alone.

Historia
We should have known the end was near. So begins Imbolo Mbue’s powerful second novel, How Beautiful We Were. Set in the fictional African village of Kosawa, it tells of a people living in fear amid environmental degradation wrought by an American oil company. Pipeline spills have rendered farmlands infertile. Children are dying from drinking toxic water. Promises of cleanup and financial reparations to the villagers are made - and ignored. The country’s government, led by a brazen dictator, exists to serve its own interests.

Storytelling at its Best!
Revisado: 09-23-22
A magnificent book with interwoven intergenerational and globally connected lives and experiences. The writing is exceptional, seemingly simple yet evocative, sensual, emotionally engaging and thoughtful with an underlying musicality in the words that the performers further enhance in a naturalistic manner. Highly recommend: engaging, satisfying, compelling.

Born to a prominent Chicago judge and his stifled socialite wife, Mia Dennett moves against the grain as a young inner-city art teacher. One night, Mia enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. With his smooth moves and modest wit, Colin Thatcher seems at first like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life.

This book surprised me. It was a freebie or I would never have read it. I'm not interested in murder, suspense or mystery novels, yet Lindy Nettleton caught me with her voice and character interpretation. I enjoyed the multi-POV story telling, character development and suspense.

"True belonging doesn't require us to change who we are. It requires us to be who we are." Social scientist Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW, has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives - experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame, and empathy. In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization.

I love Brene Brown and highly recommend The Power of Vulnerability to everyone.
Braving the Wilderness took me by surprise in that it is just as important for people to hear/read since she focuses on the current U.S. political and social climate.
Brown once more provides important insights on social issues and behavior with passion, courage and intelligence so each of us can brave the wilderness and forge a more secure and kinder society.

"When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but really loves you, then you become real." First published in 1922, Margery Williams' enchanting story about a toy rabbit is a classic of children's literature. This gentle rendition comes alive through Meryl Streep's soothing narration and George Winston's beautiful music score. Ages four and up.

Historia
Academy Award winner Dustin Hoffman gives an understated and exemplary performance of this satiric look at the unreality of American media culture. Chance, the enigmatic gardener, becomes Chauncey Gardiner after getting hit by a limo belonging to a Wall Street tycoon. The whirlwind that follows brings Chance to his new status of political policy advisor and possible vice presidential candidate. His garden-variety political responses, inspired by television, become heralded as visionary, and he is soon a media icon.

Timeless!
Revisado: 06-23-18
The movie was so good I'd never considered reading this until Audible offered it as a promo. It's well worth a credit or buying.
The writing is rich and honed and Hoffman's restrained yet emotive voice is perfect for the narration.
The book is so much better than the film adaptation (I know this is usually the case, but it was a great movie). I highly recommend BEING THERE and have already re-listened to it and will continue to do so for the writing and carefully observed story.

Angeles Arrien with Timeless Wisdom
Revisado: 06-23-18
Though seemingly dated, the al-Qaeda attack in 2001 dramatically changed life in the United States. This kind of horror continues to require our attention and response in various forms. Cultural anthropologist and shaman, Angeles Arrien offers deep wisdom, intelligence and compassion in this conversation with Michael Toms. Well worth listening to both for their conversation but also because she is a model for the art of active listening.

Awe and exhilaration—along with heartbreak and mordant wit—abound in Lolita, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsession for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America.

Exceptional Listen
Revisado: 06-23-18
As a feminist in a culture that has sexualized a twelve-year-old as the predator, I was resistant to read this; however, Jeremy Irons' voice drew me in and I'm so glad.
Nabokov's LOLITA is oppositional to the common lurid cultural references and movie's depiction/bastardization of this extraordinary book. Dolores Haze is not the sexually manipulative girl alluded to in the culture and film, but instead the object of Humbert Humbert's erotic obsession. Nabokov's exquisite writing intelligently captures Humbert's increasing conflict between his obsession and the cultural mores that prevent his fulfillment.
I highly recommend this book especially with Irons' narration.
