Fun story, questionable narration for Panda
Revisado: 09-12-24
I love Jeff Hays, but whoever is narrating Panda needs to reconsider their choices. She is voice so poorly and so obnoxiously, that I almost stopped listening every time the character spoke.
Completely took me out of a story. Took an over the top character and made her unbearable.

The world ends in a slew of blue notification boxes, bringing with it a game-like existence including monsters and Classes. Now, John has to make his way from Kluane National Park in the Yukon to Whitehorse through monster infested forests. But, that's not enough; because he'll need to help rebuild civilization itself around the System, aliens and monsters. And, as always, humanity will be its own greatest enemy.

First book I’ve returned
Revisado: 04-05-24
There are unlikable main characters and then there is John. He’s angsty, angry (not even in an interesting way), and does not grow.
The system itself is interesting and the only reason I made it as far as I did, but I just couldn’t take it anymore. I’d literally groan out loud at the constant childish outbursts.
I thought maybe it would get better and looked online and it turns out the character doesn’t grow out of this at all.
Additionally (and separately) found out the author tries to get any book removed for using the vague term system apocalypse, which is pretty wild in itself.
Might be for some people, but this is NOT for me.
I’ll add, Nick is normally great and most of the narration was great, but in this all of the human woman, except the Asian women, sound almost identical. And it’s a very whiney nasally tone that almost sounds like a caricature of a woman.

Historia
Childhood friends Patricia Delfine and Laurence Armstead didn't expect to see each other again after parting ways under mysterious circumstances during high school. After all, the development of magical powers and the invention of a two-second time machine could hardly fail to alarm one's peers and families. But now they're both adults, living in the hipster mecca San Francisco, and the planet is falling apart around them.

So so boring, could have been so much better.
Revisado: 01-05-24
The story was fine, I guess. I just don’t understand how it was so boring.
The first half of the book could be drastically shortened. We don’t need 6 hours of examples of them being outcasts.
It’s puzzling. There’s magic, there’s a Time Machine, there is another dimension, there are teams working to create a wormhole device to evacuate the planet, and there are two huge battles. But somehow it’s incredibly dull. All of the exciting aspects of the story are wasted. I’m left wanting more from every aspect, and not in a good way.
The story, characters, and relationship aren’t necessarily BAD, but they aren’t strong enough to be the only part of the book driving the entire story. Maybe if I’d known it was more of a character drama than a sci-fi/fantasy story, I’d have enjoyed it more. But even from that aspect, it was just ok.

Story is good, writing isn’t
Revisado: 10-18-23
I really want to love this. The story and concept is good, but EVERYTHING is overly explained, like the reader is an idiot. It very quickly gets old.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Loved it until the romance got over the top
Revisado: 10-03-23
The romance is VERY cringe inducing. The main couple is pretty good, until they actually get together. And the sex scenes are absurd.
I loved pretty much everything else. The action scenes, the school, everything else was written extremely well.
There were a few narration issues, but all poor edits. The actual narration was good. Until the one male POV character chapter occurred. That narrator was not enjoyable. Almost a mix of a “bro” and an angsty Y2K emo kid. Honestly wish they’d just let the main narrator continue into his POV, she did a fine job with his voice the rest of the book.

Revisado: 05-31-22
Overall, it was great!
Only minor complaint is that it felt like Alric initially went backwards in terms of the character development we’d seen in the first book. Still great and he redeems himself though!

Historia
In the highly anticipated finale to the New York Times best-selling trilogy, dictators, prophets, and tensions rise. In a world that’s conquered death, will humanity finally be torn asunder by the immortal beings it created? Citra and Rowan have disappeared. Endura is gone. It seems like nothing stands between Scythe Goddard and absolute dominion over the world scythedom. With the silence of the Thunderhead and the reverberations of the Great Resonance still shaking the earth to its core, the question remains: Is there anyone left who can stop him?

I’m so sad this series is only a Trilogy.
Revisado: 04-11-22
First of all, Tremblay’s performance in wonderful.
Yes, some may say the story is a little slower at points than the previous books, but it’s extremely well told. Goddard is as infuriating as ever.
There’s one thread that I feel didn’t get wrapped up as well as I’d hoped, but it’s purely my preference thinking “what would the world have thought of xxxxx event”.
Great ending to a great series. I’m always sad when a great series with great characters wraps up, so now I the search begins for another. I guess it’s time to explore more of Shusterman’s work!

Like poop on your shoe, bad luck had a knack for sticking Charlie wherever he went. And it sure did stink. Wormholes to a distant galaxy? Done it. Alien slavery? Yup. Forced gladiatorial combat? That too. Space pirate and eventual rebel leader? Check. Rising to the pinnacle of power as Dragon King? Uh-huh. Charlie, it seemed, had seen and survived it all, and at long last it looked like he’d finally earned himself a little peace and quiet. That is until a whole new threat reared its ugly head.

Love the series
Revisado: 08-30-21
Good book in the series. Narration is great as always, but it kind of took my out of it when the narrator attempted to do a British accent. Not very good, but the rest of the narration is at the high level we’ve come to expect.

It was looking like Lady Luck had quite a grudge against him. In fact, at this point merely crashing the multi-billion-dollar ship he had helped design would have felt like winning the lottery compared to his current dilemma. If only he were so lucky. Things had started off all right - that is, until a freak wormhole unexpectedly swallowed his ship, leaving him stranded on an unknown planet far, far from home.
