Great work of fiction with great reading performance
Revisado: 06-13-23
I listen to audio books when I’m driving. After starting the Stormlight Archive series, I find myself finding all kinds of excuses to drive and listen. I found a reading speed of 1.25 to be perfect. The reading performance brings the book to life. It is a prodigious work of fiction (over 48 hours) with characters that fall along a whole range of spectrum. I will certainly continue this story with the next series.

I found it very instructive and it has expanded my outlook on so many fronts. I’m only sorry it ended so quickly.

Historia
Booker T. Washington fought his way out of slavery to become an educator, statesman, political shaper, and proponent of the "do-it-yourself" idea. In his autobiography, he describes his early life as a slave on a Virginia plantation, his steady rise during the Civil War, his struggle for education, his schooling at the Hampton Institute, and his years as founder and president of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, which was devoted to helping minorities learn useful, marketable skills.

Inspiring and uplifting
Revisado: 07-25-22
I have not read a book that was so optimistic and hopeful about race relations as Up From Slavery. There was no gloom glorified or moments of utter deprivation that was exploited. They were mentioned to show that something good had come come out of them. I could take to heart that the struggle for education is bitter and the fruit from it so much sweeter. It mirrored my own aspirations.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

I was led to this book by my teenage son who loves to read. He described it as a page turner - it was. It was a story that included morality, humor, and ingenuity that makes people want to solve problems than throwing in the towel. I had enjoyed “There Martian” as a movie. I would love to read the book now.
I also liked the reading style of Ray Porter. He created indelible characters in various intonations without overdoing them. His story telling was just right and has made me want to listen to him again. It was great writing and performance that left an indelible mark on me.

Such a poor premise for a story.

Very weak ending. I would return the book if I could. Had a good start. Meandered about in the middle then left one completely deflated at the end.

Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

An engrossing tale of fantasy to escape to
Revisado: 06-30-19
The story is the more interesting by the narrator who is superb at creating the voice and mannerisms of the various characters that make up the book. I like listening while I’m driving and it has made my trips more enjoyable. The story is full of intrigue, treachery, loyalty, innocence, love, and yes magic. There are a whole cast of human characters rich in detail and woven so intricately that one is left wondering what mind could conjure such story in such a world so that the listener is transported and lost in it. I am looking forward to listen to the second book.

Nuggets of wisdom for those ready to listen.
Revisado: 05-11-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This book is an amalgamation of the thoughts of various writers who have been labeled self-help gurus or new age thinkers. It stresses on a person's willingness to accept themselves as One With God! To those who are traditionally religious followers, it sounds blasphemous to think of oneself as God. But as it says, when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. And appear it does - in this book. Its delivery, flow, and prose is beautiful. The quotes in the book are well placed.
What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?
The idea I will remember is the book's message saying that we or "I" hold the key to my own well being and happiness.
Any additional comments?
I have read "Three Magic Words" by U. S. Anderson, a book which reveals what the three words are only on the last page of the book. But the beauty is not just in finding what they are, but in going through the journey of reading the book until the very last moment. There are many parallels in this book which gives weight to the belief that we are our own change agents if we are to live a life of purpose and meaning.
