The Center by Saul Herzog is the stunning eighth installment in the series that has taken the publishing industry, and Hollywood rights departments, by storm. This dazzling tour de force is a full standalone novel. From the mind of one of the most creative and versatile writers working in America today, this book will surely go down as a classic of the spy thriller genre.

A well written Lance Specter Prequel
Revisado: 08-31-24
The first six books in this series refer frequently to events in the past that shape the entire narrative, but does not explain them. This book brings the whole narrative together.

Historia
On June 6, 1944, General Dwight Eisenhower addressed the thousands of American troops preparing to invade Normandy, exhorting them to embrace the “Great Crusade” they faced. Then, in a fleeting moment alone, he drafted a resignation letter in case the invasion failed. In The Light of Battle, Michel Paradis, acclaimed author of Last Mission to Tokyo, paints a vivid portrait of Dwight Eisenhower as he learns to navigate the crosscurrents of diplomacy, politics, strategy, family, and fame with the fate of the free world hanging in the balance.

A good study of Eisenhower
Revisado: 06-29-24
A good read. My interest is leadership, and this a great review of the talents and the learning he brought to the leadership role, and how he carried out that role in preparation for D-Day.

This is a compelling narrative
Revisado: 02-20-24
This book is well written; it is hard to “put down”. The author has a good feel for what is militarily possible, and a good grasp of history, so the events are believable. My only complaint is that because you know Lance will survive every situation, some of his escapes are a bit improbable.

When Lance Spector quit the CIA, he swore he was out for good. One more government lie and he would go off the deep end. They could find someone else to do their dirty work. As far as he was concerned, Washington, Langley, the Pentagon could all go to hell.

I enjoyed this book. Some of the plot lines were a bit far fetched, but the whole story held together well. I’m downloading the second book now.

Historia
The fourth and final year of the Civil War offers one of that era’s most compelling narratives, defining the nation and one of history’s great turning points. Now, S.C. Gwynne’s Hymns of the Republic addresses the time Ulysses S. Grant arrives to take command of all Union armies in March 1864 to the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox a year later. He breathes new life into the epic battle between Lee and Grant; the advent of 180,000 black soldiers in the Union army; Sherman’s March to the Sea; the rise of Clara Barton; and much more.

Too Much Social Justice
Revisado: 11-08-19
I was disappointed in this book. There was much material to be covered, but the author felt obligated to present the usual social opinions of modern scholars: nonwhites good, women good, white men arrogant, stupid and evil, especially Union white men. The first 5 hours of the book are basically a musical consisting of endless hymns to Social Justice linked by a “book” of actual history. After that, he begins to focus more on history, but cannot help returning to his bottle of Social Justice for another swig before going on with his story. There are about 5 hours of useful material here, and I did find that interesting and educational. Overall, I think the slog through the chaff was worth the wheat I discovered.

Historia
During the 229-year period from 1485 to 1714, England transformed itself from a minor feudal state into what has been called "the first modern society" and emerged as the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the world. Those years hold a huge and captivating story. The English survived repeated epidemics and famines, one failed invasion and two successful ones, two civil wars, a series of violent religious reformations and counter-reformations, and confrontations with two of the most powerful monarchs on earth.

Old-fashioned and inaccurate
- De E. Stein en 02-26-14
A great topic and discussion marred by Social Justice Worriory.
Revisado: 11-08-18
This author is knowledgeable, speaks clearly, and has many interesting anecdotes. Sadly, he feels compelled to insert a SJW sermonette in the opening and closing chapters to the effect that the English elite and gentry were uniquely morally depraved in their treatment of others, as if he were ignorant of the events in contemporary European, Ottoman, Far Eastern, and pretty much every other society in the world. It made the last chapter almost impossible to listen to. Sad.

Great poems from our English past
Revisado: 10-27-18
These 3 poems are in Old English, updated by Tolkien. They are by contemporaries of Chaucer. If you listen carefully to the narratives and can put them into the social and religious context of the time, they will be revealed for the great works of literary art that they are.

Revisado: 08-30-18
I’ve been purchasing all of Dr. Harl’s lectures. He does a wonderful job of voicing the narrative of civilization as man attempts to solve one great problem after another, and spices it with humorous stories of the all too human failings we are heir to. Good stuff.

A worthwhile "big-history" survey
- De Acteon en 11-22-13
This is the best example of this series
Revisado: 07-19-18
The narrator does a remarkable job. Unlike Western Civ, where I have been exposed to the basics all my life, and the lectures complement my existing knowledge, here the author must build a sturdy intellectual framework from scratch, and then hang history and insights from it, without soiling the narrative with his own political prejudices. A remarkably fast paced and informative lecture series that even after 48 installments left me wanting more.

Fun course but Professor Fears is not for everyone
- De Quaker en 11-04-13
Entertaining but flawed
Revisado: 07-11-18
I listen to these lectures when walking. Dr. Fears is an entertaining storyteller, and helps pass the time. The problem is, that he lets his feelings get in the way of an accurate presentation. Who knew that the career of Franklin Roosevelt would be the most discussed event of 5,000 years of history? And, the history he presents is often superficial and sometimes flat out wrong. I’m reminded of what Twain said: “What gets us into trouble is not what we don't know. It's what we know for sure that just ain't so.”
