Historia
One year after the death of his beloved musician father, thirteen-year-old Benny Oh begins to hear voices. The voices belong to the things in his house—a sneaker, a broken Christmas ornament, a piece of wilted lettuce. Although Benny doesn't understand what these things are saying, he can sense their emotional tone; some are pleasant, a gentle hum or coo, but others are snide, angry and full of pain. When his mother, Annabelle, develops a hoarding problem, the voices grow more clamorous.

Historia
Hailed as “one of the most thrilling writers at work today” (Huffington Post), Diana Evans reaches new heights with her searing depiction of two couples struggling through a year of marital crisis. In a crooked house in South London, Melissa feels increasingly that she’s defined solely by motherhood, while Michael mourns the former thrill of their romance. In the suburbs, Stephanie’s aspirations for bliss on the commuter belt, coupled with her white middle-class upbringing, compound Damian’s itch for a bigger life catalyzed by the death of his activist father.

Ordinary would be thrilling. OH. HOW. TIRESOME.
Revisado: 05-12-19
I admit - I never got to the end. After just more than half the novel I realized there's no reason to continue.
Starting with the quite horrible narrator, who practically KILLED this book. By pausing. Everywhere. There was. A comma. Seems like the only thing she does. Is. Pause. I thought i was going MAD.
On top of that, the story is not only boring but sounds like it's written from a somewhat childish POV on marriage, parenting, and sex in a long term relationship. Having been there, done that. I am looking for a more sophisticated POV on those issues, which this book was not about to deliver.
In fact, REAL ordinary people have much more interesting small crisis, but they probably need a more talented author to capture them.
Sorry. A waste of time.

your heart will crack and shatter gently. A must
Revisado: 04-21-19
don't give up on this book, even if it's a little slow and timid at first.
You will find yourself drawn to an era you didn't know anything about, in love with all of the main characters and finally heartbroken.
Michael Crouch does an amazing job narrating this book and bringing his characters alive.
The novel's tales will make small cracks in your heart and shatter it gently.
A book about love, politics, being young, being an artist and being alive.
A must read.

Historia
It's the early 1980s—the country is in a deep recession, and life after college is harder than ever. In the cafés on College Hill, the wised-up kids are inhaling Derrida and listening to Talking Heads. But Madeleine Hanna, dutiful English major, is writing her senior thesis on Jane Austen and George Eliot, purveyors of the marriage plot that lies at the heart of the greatest English novels.

Pittu almost compensates for lack of character..
Revisado: 04-21-19
While "Middlesex" was one of my all-time favorite books, this novel didn't make me feel too much.
As an English major feminist myself, some of the literary references made me laugh, and the story was engaging, but perhaps like the characters themselves, I didn't develop any real emotion towards them, and I suspect so did Eugenides.
It's been a while since I've questioned an author's love for his own characters, but it seems like at least one of the 3 main characters, Madeleine, lacks character.
Pittu is such a talented narrator, that I've gone to look for other books that he narrates.
Go and read "Middlesex" if you haven't, instead.

A diary is Nao's only solace—and will touch lives in ways she can scarcely imagine. Across the Pacific, we meet Ruth, a novelist living on a remote island who discovers a collection of artifacts washed ashore in a Hello Kitty lunchbox - possibly debris from the devastating 2011 tsunami.

Historia
Lucy and Owen, ambitious, thoroughly-therapized New Yorkers, have taken the plunge, trading in their crazy life in a cramped apartment for Beekman, a bucolic Hudson Valley exurb. They've got a 200-year-old house, an autistic son obsessed with the Titanic, and 17 chickens, at last count. It's the kind of paradise where stay-at-home moms team up to cook the school's "hot lunch", dads grill grass-fed burgers, and, as Lucy observes, "chopping kale has become a certain kind of American housewife's version of chopping wood".

Middle class, middle age sanctimonious moral tale
Revisado: 04-30-18
Any additional comments?
Spoiler alert?
an "arrangement" of a 6 months "open marriage" is bound to have so many implications on a relationship and on each of its sides, yet somehow the author skips all of these deep issues and questions as lightly as a sitcom.
the narration is amazing and the writing is fluid, but the story is SO shallow and sanctimonious I just couldn't take it.
a married man and woman have sex for the first time in 9 years with a new partner and we hear nothing about it, probably assuming it was "terrific". Not that I was expecting explicit sex descriptions, but SOME internal monologue about it? nothing. Like a PG13 movie, the scene simply moves on to the next morning. Nothing dramatic.
The woman (obviously) falls in love, the man (obviously) gets involved with a loonie. There even is some misogyny in this book, allowing us to "allow" Lucy to go on and have an affair only since she has an autistic child and a dead mom. As if a "normal" woman, with OK kids and a living functioning family has no excuse to want some extra-marital sex.
This book is American in the worst way it can be, and LORD I hope I will not get recommendations for similar ones in the future.

What other book might you compare A Visit from the Goon Squad to and why?
This read reminded me of Joyce's "Dubliners". So much depth, compassion, and sensitivity towards her characters. The narration was absolutely superb. I still can't move on to my next book.

Mistry's ability to tell the most mundane, private life stories, and tie them with the story of humanity, nations, history is magnificent. I couldn't part with the characters when the book was finished.

Revisado: 10-29-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Lean In to be better than the print version?
I didn't read the print. I wasn't too crazy about the reading, which was a bit too emotional to my taste, but I just finished the book and am starting over tomorrow. Can't believe I am thankful for heavy traffic.. Listening and nodding the whole time - a MUST READ Feminist Manifesto for every woman, especially she who claims not to be a Feminist..
