The world outside has grown toxic, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. The remnants of humanity live underground in a single silo. But there are always those who hope, who dream. When we last saw them, this unlikely group was heading into the Northern Territory of the kingdom of Pitoria, on the run from the sadistic and power-hungry King Aloysius of Brigant. The Smoke Thieves have discovered that demon smoke is not only an illegal drug used for pleasure, but in fact, when taken by children, demon smoke briefly gives its users super-human strength.

While present-day firefighters John Kirk and his partner are inside a burning house trying to locate the fire, something goes terribly wrong. The next morning, John awakes in a hospital surrounded by a group of men claiming to be the crew of Engine Company 8 and that they had rescued him from the porch of a burning house, the night before.
