Thoughtful beautiful Sci Fi
Revisado: 10-09-22
I enjoyed My Octopus Teacher so checked this out. Starts slow but stick with it. This is one of the best novels I've read. Narrator is fantastic, book is very moving. A lot of food for thought about our species, the way we treat animals and communicate with each other.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Revisado: 02-11-22
Outstanding. I often lose steam with long audiobooks but couldn’t put this one down. The story: 10/10. Ray Porter: 12/10 I may or may not have choked up at the end. Wish it wasn’t over.

Fantastic noir masterpiece with narrator to match
Revisado: 10-28-21
Read this years ago when I was young but to hear it read by Ray Porter is a real treat. His voices are amazing- without going over the too it sounds like different people esp the men. And hoo the language - she brought him a drink. Bubbles rose to the top like false hopes. !! classic. I don’t love the attitudes toward women but it sure was a different time.

Historia
In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl's halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. That's how this extraordinary autobiography began. Over the past seven years, Bruce Springsteen has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing to this audio the same honesty, humor, and originality found in his songs.

Spread some of that talent around, Brucie
Revisado: 09-21-21
Ive been a big fan of the Boss for decades. Who knew he could write and read out loud too. After hearing his story (a lot of which was new to me) I admire him even more. Decent, down to earth guy. But geez, that's some uneven distribution of talent there, man.

= master audiobook. I read some Graham Greene way back when, and liked it though I don't remember much, but gave this a try because I like Mr Firth as an actor. I was not disappointed! Totally drawn in, even though the plot was a little soap operaish. But I still believed it, so kudos Mr Firth and Mr Greene.

Historia
A lawyer with a growing stockpile of securities in the bank, three beautiful children, a compliant and decorative wife, and a lovely house in the suburbs, Walter Bridge has achieved all that is expected of someone of his race and background. But try as he might to control the lives of those around him, they prove perversely independent. In Mr. Bridge and its companion, Mrs. Bridge, Evan S. Connell has brilliantly realized the lives of upper-middle-class Americans living in the years just before and during World War II.

Brilliant book, brilliant narration
Revisado: 09-19-21
Not sure what to say about this, except that it's brilliant. Internal life of a family man in the 50s, nothing exciting plot wise, but wow it got me right in the gut. I only know Connell's work on Custer, but he's a great novel writer. George Guidall is a legend and pulls you in to every tiny detail of this very ordinary life. I'm making it sound boring but this is one of the deepest books I've ever listened to.

survival geekitude
Revisado: 09-18-21
I really liked this. Took me a while to get past Wesley Crusher, and at first Wil Wheaton was too much of an annoying wiseass for a guy who's abandoned on Mars but he grew on me. The research behind this book is amazing. Most of what goes on the book could happen, apparently. Andy Wier did some serious homework. Great survival story, with a hefty dose of geekery.

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Loved this. Really interesting idea to tell the story of Achilles through the eyes of Patroclus. Even if you don't know the classics, you'll enjoy this, but you'll REALLY enjoy it if you know the Iliad and the story of the Trojan war. Thought Frazer Douglas did a fine job.

WOW- Made my mind bloom
Revisado: 01-04-21
Don't even know where to start with this one! I don't know this writer but a fan of the narrator,I never heard/read anything like this -historical fiction/time travel/fantasy/sci fi/romance. Chapters are like short stories of different lives/time periods w/ same main characters. They start in ancient Rome and end up hundreds (thousands?) of years in the future. A lot of things I didn't get, but I liked the mystery. Kawika Guilermo's imagination is literally out of this world. And Eunice Wong telling a massive story w/ so many characters is amazing. Highly recommend. It'll expand your concept of reality.

Literary bravery
Revisado: 02-25-20
I was incredibly moved by this courageous account, brought to tears several times. Having daughters, this hit right in the gut. Couldn't help but imagine my girls in this situation. they were adopted from China and Ms. Miller being Asian-American also hit home. This young woman went through a kind of hell, and telling her story will save many who think they are alone.
