Historia
My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me. So begins a tale told from his own point of view - a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

Poor narration of a great story
Revisado: 12-13-23
This book is beautiful and riveting. It is poorly read. I learned to tolerate the reader, but never enjoyed him. His pronunciation of names is so far from how they are spelled that it takes you out of the story. Just awful.

Historia
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Really not good, unfortunately
Revisado: 06-16-23
This book is only mildly interesting, and it isn't really about the pandemic response at all. It is about people who did some pandemic planning 15+ years before the pandemic. That's fine, but it's not really what the jacket blurb claims. also, it is extremely poorly read. Pretty much un-listenable.

More than 20 years ago, the first epic fantasy novel featuring FitzChivalry Farseer and his mysterious, often maddening friend the Fool struck like a bolt of brilliant lightning. Now New York Times best-selling author Robin Hobb brings to a momentous close the third trilogy featuring these beloved characters in a novel of unsurpassed artistry that is sure to endure as one of the great masterworks of the genre.

A satisfying end to the Realm of the Elderlings
Revisado: 09-22-22
The narration is still awful. But if you've made it this far, you're probably used to it.
The story is much more interesting than most of Fool's Assassin or Fool's Quest. I loved Liveship Traders, so I really enjoy re-visiting those characters, and wish they showed up sooner in this trilogy.
There is interesting plot, good pacing, and a satisfying ending to an epic fantasy series (which is certainly not a given). And because the plot climax is not the emotional climax, for once, Hobb has written some falling action!

Historia
The harrowing adventures of FitzChivalry Farseer and his enigmatic friend, the Fool, continue in Robin Hobb's triumphant follow-up to Fool's Assassin. But Fool's Quest is more than just a sequel. With the artistry and imagination her fans have come to expect, Hobb builds masterfully on all that has gone before, revealing devastating secrets and shocking conspiracies that cast a dark shadow over the history of Fitz and his world - a shadow that now stretches to darken all future hope.

Absolutely Terrible Narration
Revisado: 09-14-22
The story is okay. Better than book 1 of this trilogy. Classic Hobb, the climax is in the last chapter with no falling action at all. This book doesn't even pretend to finish a story. It ends on 2 cliffhangers. But the real problem is the narration. It is so, so bad. I had thought that the Liveship Traders was poorly narrated. But this makes Liveship seem excellent by comparison. The interpretation of the characters doesn't fit with the previous trilogies, and the voices are annoying, breathy, and indistinct. Just awful.

A professional contract? Simply the taste of victory? Through the lens of the highly competitive world of girls’ softball, Lewis reveals the youth sports industrial complex that has arisen to aggressively monetize after-school pastimes.

Interesting and too short
Revisado: 05-03-22
An interesting book. I wish it had more depth, and thus was longer. It feels more like a very long article in the Sunday paper than a full book. Still quite enjoyable. I was not a huge fan of the ending but I suspect I am in the minority.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Average at best
Revisado: 03-25-22
This story starts off strong, then takes a turn and bogs down in its second act, and veers off course entirely in the 3rd act. It has some engaging moments, and I finished it in a matter of days, but it really wasn't impressive. I found it less and less believable the more I listened. It has large plot holes. It also has a predictable feel to it, but my predictions were also consistently wrong, so either I'm a bad reader, or the foreshadowing is poorly executed.
The narrator does a fine job. He does a serviceable version of accents from all over the world and the few characters all have a unique voice.
If you enjoy Andy Weir and need to be entertained for a road trip or something similar, this is fine. Otherwise I would skip it.

The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame...and of a struggle between good and evil that will turn church against state, and brother against brother.

Engaging story. Narrator will grow on you.
Revisado: 02-05-22
The story is long, expansive, and mostly very engaging. I've "read" it three times now because it is great to listen to in the car or while doing chores around the house. The last third of the book feels a bit like a coda, but is still entertaining and I am always happy to keep following the characters. The last hour, however, is superfluous and really adds nothing to the story. I highly recommend this book.
Like many narrators, I find John Lee difficult to listen to for the first half hour, but after that I grow accustomed to him, and his varying voices and characters are excellent.

Historia
It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages. England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east. Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king. Without a clear rule of law, chaos reigns. In these turbulent times, three characters find their lives intertwined.

Not as epic in scope or length as Pillars or World
Revisado: 01-06-22
Not as epic as his first two Kingsbridge novels, and yes, fairly predictable, but still an enjoyable and entertaining read. The characters and their motivations are not strongly developed, instead relying on Follett's established archetypes, but the story stands quite well despite this.

Alright
Revisado: 10-04-21
Certainly not my favorite le Carre work, but entertaining enough. It's much more broad than his best works, and I think it suffers for it. nonetheless, its entertaining enough for a long car ride and is well read. I thought the motivations of some characters were pretty thin by the finale, but perhaps I would have felt differently if I were a brit living in the 1970s.
