Historia
World-renowned adventuress Beryl Helliwell cited for "reckless" motoring? Why, the very idea! Constable Gibbs just has it in for her. The solution? Charm the magistrate, of course. But days after Beryl's appearance before the bench, she and Edwina pay a visit to the magistrate only to find his home ransacked and the man himself lying dead at the bottom of a grand staircase. Given the state of the house, his death appears to be connected to a rash of robberies in the village.

Thin on Mystery
Revisado: 02-24-25
The characters were well drawn, but there wasn't as much substance around the mystery as I'd have liked. Won't be reading more in this series.

Historia
Born on the Norwegian island that bears her name, Ingrid Barrøy’s world is circumscribed by storm-scoured rocks and the moods of the sea by which her family lives and dies. But her father dreams of building a quay that will end their isolation, and her mother longs for the island of her youth, and the country faces its own sea change: the advent of a modern world, and all its unpredictability and violence.

Fascinating glimpse into life
Revisado: 02-08-24
I really enjoyed this glimpse into life on a Norwegian island near the Lofotens. The daily and seasonal cadences, the struggles, and the amazing resilience.

Historia
To the forest on the shore of the Kingdom of the Isles, the orphan Pug came to study with the master magician Kulgan. But though his courage won him a place at court and the heart of a lovely princess, he was ill at ease with the normal ways of wizardry. Yet Pug's strange sort of magic would one day change forever the fates of two worlds. For dark beings from another world had opened a rift in the fabric of spacetime to being again the age-old battle between the forces of Order and Chaos.

LOTR-light
Revisado: 09-27-23
We have elves and dwarves and magicians and a big dragon sitting on gold under a mountain, just missing the hobbits. Oh yes, and all men running around being brave whilst thinking of the beautiful princess left behind in the castle. Sigh. While there are original elements, the tropes stand out and the casual misogyny is tiresome (3 named women in the entire book).

Writing is very unsophisticated and story plods along. Action is nothing we haven't heard before a million times and much, much better. Take a pass on this one.

A classic thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Crichton, Sphere is a bravura demonstration of what he does better than anyone: riveting storytelling that combines frighteningly plausible, cutting-edge science and technology with pulse-pounding action and serious chills.

Some interesting ideas but terrible writing
Revisado: 01-05-23
Really hoped to enjoy this but the awful dialog and generally poor writing kept getting in the way. The author also failed to make the individual main characters very interesting or intelligent - and given their ostensible careers, that should have been a given.

Historia
Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

just couldn't get into this book with it's self-indulgently curmudgeon of a protagonist
did not find his outlook using or endearing, just sad and pathetic ad not somebody I want to spend time with.

After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

Forrest Gump with a twist
Revisado: 11-27-22
This was an amusing listen, though at times it did get a little bogged down in its own cleverness during the Forrest Gump-ish romp through the 20th century.

Slow start and . . .
Revisado: 10-17-22
finally gave up on this one. I read a LOT of mysteries and this one felt more like it was trying to become a romance novel (not a fan). wish I had read about the author before downloading - would have known to steer clear. way too much focus on looks and sexual tension; everything was overly dramatic and reader did not overcome the poor writing

almost gave up on this a couple times, but glad I hung in as it proved interesting - just had to get past the annoying characterizations (like the super insecure 23 yr old phd who came across like a 16 yr old much of the time).

Historia
“The Heron” is the nickname a big-city accountant has attached to himself in his new home near San Diego, where he’s using the alias to avoid a hit man who may be after him. It seems a former client believes that The Heron has skipped town with several million dollars not his own. Don Winslow’s ensuing, entertaining yarn is by turns twisty, dark, and comical as we observe the delicate dance between the pursuer and the pursued.
