Fantastic new entry in the Chrysalis series. Even more than in the earlier books we get to see the ants mounting a major defense of the colony against invaders. It’s fascinating to watch them take on other intelligent species for the first time. Great read.

Historia
Robert K. Massie returns with another masterpiece of narrative biography, the extraordinary story of an obscure German princess who became Catherine the Great. Born into a minor noble family, Catherine transformed herself into empress of Russia by sheer determination. For thirty-four years, the government, foreign policy, cultural development, and welfare of the Russian people were in her hands.

Another truly excellent history by Robert Massie. I’m not typically a fan of Russian history but his biographies are bringing me around.

Historia
The American 345th Bomb Group - the Air Apaches - was legendary in the war against Japan. The first fully trained and fully equipped group sent to the South Pacific, the 345th racked up a devastating score against the enemy. Armed to the teeth with machine guns and fragmentation bombs, and flying their B-25s at impossibly low altitudes - often below 50 feet - the pilots and air crews strafed and bombed enemy installations and shipping with a fury that helped cripple Japan.

Good history if a bit scattered
Revisado: 01-04-24
A good collection of personal accounts relating to this one particular unit and general information on other associated bomber units. The book does many things exceptionally well. The general chaos of air raids is well demonstrated through parallel personal accounts and through careful descriptions of the battlefields. The tactics used and the general difficulties of command and control in such chaotic circumstances are well documented. The time the author takes to describe and document to various airfields used by the bomber group were surprisingly interesting. The diverse array of climates and terrains were carefully documented as well as the quality of the different airfield facilities. Finally, the author gives an excellent feel for the dangers of operating over the Pacific Ocean. Possibly a quarter of the book is devoted to dangers of weather, search and rescue, and the travails of downed pilots. Personally, I found the number of aircraft and crews who simply disappeared shocking. The book is useful in getting the flavor of this part of the air war in the Pacific, but often sketchy in detail relating to any other part of the conflict. For example, planes other than the bombers used by the 345th bomb group, are rarely (if ever) described, despite being constantly mentioned in the story. Except for a couple examples the book seems to generally ignore most Japanese sources. There is some mention that Japanese primary sources are often missing but the book seems to take the American accounts and particularly damage estimates at face value.
Overall I would strongly recommend this to anyone with an interest in the WWII Pacific Theater. The author’s style flows well and is easy to read. The history is focused and thorough within the author’s selected topic.

As a Keeper of the Peace (Kop) for the mystical world of Alius, my team and I were sent to investigate a series of kidnappings within the supernatural community. It was in the warehouse that I met Nimera. She was a mermaid trapped in a tank, forced to entertain the worst kind of men. But I screwed up, and gunshots were fired. Nimera was suddenly dying in my arms...so I did the only thing I could, making her like me, a vampire.

A Superb Urban Fantasy
Revisado: 06-21-23
I was honestly skeptical for a story about a Vampire Mermaid Princess but this proved to be an excellent fantasy tale in its own right in addition to being a fun romance story. In this, and in his Otherside series, the author really shows his talent for building fun and believable fantasy worlds.

The story has an excellent pacing and truly interesting characters. This story has one of the best magic system I’ve come across, which the author has clearly put a lot of thought into. I am very excited for book 2.

Historia
There are few moments in American history in which the course of events tipped so suddenly and so dramatically as at the Battle of Midway. At dawn of June 4, 1942, a rampaging Japanese navy ruled the Pacific. By sunset, their vaunted carrier force (the Kido Butai) had been sunk and their grip on the Pacific had been loosened forever. In this absolutely riveting account of a key moment in the history of World War II, one of America's leading naval historians, Craig L. Symonds, paints an unforgettable portrait of ingenuity, courage, and sacrifice.

Excellent and complete history of the battle.
Revisado: 04-03-15
The book covers the critical events leading up to Midway as well as a detailed account of the battle itself. While it is a complete history and full of detail, it is not overly scholarly and moves along at a comfortable pace. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who also enjoys military histories by Stephen Ambrose.
