Such a book hangover!
Revisado: 08-01-23
Amazing world building! I'm struggling, I listened to this and the first omnibus and I can't find the right fit to fill the book void left behind. Interesting settings, complex characters and an incredible balance of sci-fi fantasy! I need more of this world though the book ends satisfyingly I just enjoyed the trip so much. I highly recommend I Am Just Junco and I Am Not Junco for sci-fi fantasy fans.

Enjoyed the story, hated the narrator
Revisado: 06-12-23
The story was enjoyable but I liked the previous narrators from the series more than this one. The male narrator wasn't terrible but I was disappointed he did not use accents, took me out of the setting a bit. His pacing was good and his voice pleasant though. The female narrator made this one REALLY hard to get through. She was emotionally tone deaf, with really terrible pacing, almost no differentiation between character voices making it hard to understand conversations. Where did she record her parts of the story...I mean, bad echo throughout her portion, inconsistent delivery, odd mouth sounds, not normal plosives but clicking smacking speech style. I was very frustrated listening to her and considered putting in for a refund and just getting the book to read the good old fashioned way instead. I ended up finishing by sheer force of will and because the male narrator wasn't a total annoying waste of airtime. Should cnsider re-recording the female portions at least to improve listener feedback and experience. I impulse bought this book after listening to the last- I might have skipped this one entirely if I'd known the female reader was going to be so bad though. This story reminded me to listen to the samples and read the reviews before hitting the purchase button...

Thaddeus Walker Bowman Owens, the backup quarterback for the Chicago Stars, is a team player, talented sideline coach, occasional male underwear model, and a man with a low tolerance for divas. Olivia Shore, international opera superstar, is a driven diva with a passion for perfection, a craving for justice, too many secrets—and a monumental grudge against the egotistical, lowbrow jock she’s been stuck with.

A happy with my purchase!
Revisado: 04-24-23
First story from this author for me. I always worry with romance if the high ratings will really mean it's a book worth reading- sometimes it's not. I am happy to say that in this case the high ratings were well deserved. I like the premise and the opposites attract even if the characters realize they have more in common later. My only meh was some of the plot resolution felt a bit unbelievable...I don't want to spoil anything for anyone but, maybe you'll get what I mean by the story conclusion. Generally I am really happy with this story though. As always Nicole Poole is an amazing, practically perfect narrator. Always glad to find Nicole's many voices in an audiobook!

Great Narration!
Revisado: 02-18-23
A good book can be ruined by a bad narrator and a bad book can be saved by a good one. This book was at least helped along by this narration team. As far as the story... meh. Tropes were leaned into, story was light on substance or emotional depth. Don't get me wrong- I am not trying to be a book snob here. I listen to plenty of romance (hooked since back in the audible escapes days). A good romance should make me kind of love the characters or I should at least relate to them. Couldn't. The story was lazy and insta - lovey. The characters were shallow and overall I was hoping for better. I absolutely love Ava Lucas as the narrator and she was the whole reason I ever even looked at the book so at least I had her stunning voice and characterization to hold me to the story.

Winnifred Gobaldi and Byron Visser are not best friends. Yes, they’ve known each other for years, but they’re not even friendly. Winnie considers them more like casual, distant acquaintances who find each other barely tolerable, especially when he's being condescending (which is all the time).

Eh...
Revisado: 01-13-23
I generally love Penny Reid stories but this left something to be desired. The lead characters were obnoxiously uncommunicative for most the story. The selected narrators were also problematic. The female narrator has some weird pronunciations for common words which I found distracting, i.e. for-meeka rather than For-mica, helo-gen rather than halo-gen...weird and distracting. It's an ongoing issue with this narrator that I have heard similar weirdness in other stories. I suffer through it for the writer rather than the narrator but I may avoid Cielo narration in the future. The male narrator was more annoying. He didn't sound rough, rugged or sexy as described by the story...he sounded like Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon. This isn't a candidate for future re-listens for me.

Loved this one!
Revisado: 11-03-22
I look forward to reading/listening to more stories by Katy Birchall. I stumbled across this story not having heard of it or the author before. The characters were well rounded and realistic. I could feel their heartaches and their excitement. Well done on the writing. The narrator was great as well and gave a lot of life and character to the voices portrayed. So good all the way around! I highly recommend this one!

Sure, Vivi knows she shouldn’t use her magic this way, but with only an “orchard hayride” scented candle on hand, she isn’t worried it will cause him anything more than a bad hair day or two.

Light spoilers to this review-----
I wanted to like this more than I did. The story sounded intriguing but didn't quite live up to the expectation and the narration lacked something...turns out one of the characters is British...you wouldn't know that from the narrator's flat reading though. The character accent was literally only used two or three times throughout the entire reading- only when the text specified the character was playing up the accent to try and gain favor or for charm with other side character. The character used very British slang and wording but it was read straight American throughout and it didn't feel like a Brit raised outside his home country (which doesn't seem to be the case based on the characters history) so the accent would be lighter, it just didn't exist with the narrator. Additionally, the voice of the narrator was not varied enough to help differentiate characters, particularly the central all female family.
As far as the story, the emotion was carried fully on the assumption of love in the past. The characters chemistry wasn't really there for me and they seemed to be carrying on based on a stated love connection from their past that never went away rather than a dynamic feeling that grew or deepened through the book's adventure.
It wasn't a total bomb for me but I wasn't anxious to find out what would happen next and I certainly didn't feel myself shipping the characters or living in their shoes. Whether that lack of feeling on my part was the poor narration or the story, I'm not completely sure.

Felt a bit immature
Revisado: 08-14-22
The story felt immature. There was character development to be had though. The narration was a disappointment though. Seemed melodramatic from both narrator's at times. The female narrator sounded very very young and her reading completely missed the tone of the moment. She always sounded happy and chipper no matter how sad, depressed, angry or upset the character was supposed to be. I definitely preferred the narrative team from the first book in the series.

Great story, narration...meh
Revisado: 08-03-22
I like the story and the characters and the plot and depth but the narration left something to be desired. Not bad narration but a bit dull. The cadence of the female narrator is a little distracting to me. Overall, just meh. I didn't feel appropriately anxious for the characters or the next big thing in the story.

Chloe Sanderson is an optimist, and not because her life is easy. As the sole caregiver for her father, who has early-onset Alzheimer’s, she’s pretty much responsible for everything. She has no time - or interest - in getting swept up in some dazzling romance. Not like her best friend, Annie, who literally wrote a rom-com that’s about to premiere in theaters across America...and happens to be inspired by Chloe and her cute but no-nonsense boss, Nick Velez.

Eh- just eh
Revisado: 03-01-22
Couldn't finish it. I wanted to finish and tried to finish. The plot sounded good in theory but it just didn't get there. The main character came off as whiny and immature. The other characters never felt developed or fleshed out. I really wanted to like this based on the description but couldn't. The bones were there but the will they or won't they became tedious and felt very high school. Flaky...the characters were flaky and joyless.
