Nearly everyone swears - whether it's over a few too many drinks, in reaction to a stubbed toe, or in flagrante delicto. And yet we sit idly by as words are banned from television and censored in books. We insist that people excise profanity from their vocabularies, and we punish children for yelling the very same dirty words that we'll mutter in relief seconds after they fall asleep. Swearing, it seems, is an intimate part of us that we have decided to selectively deny.

Overall I found the book to be disjointed and annoying most of the time. Early on he spends a lot of time throwing out his own theories. It took up a lot more time then needed. There was a point in the middle I was more engaged but only for him to come back with arguments that contradicted each other. I will give him credit for certain things that he was trying to be balanced on like not trying to ban slurs out right because there were better ways for handling it. But I think that you could take the all information in this book and lay out a much better argument than what he has here.
The author want to make the claim that there is no proof that children that are exposed to swearing are harmed by it. He claims that the studies that have been preformed are weak and aren't good enough to support that claim. He wants to look down on parents for reducing profanity claiming that it is all just words and is just a culture taboo that needs to be done away with. But the vary next chapter he is claiming slurs are deeply hurtful to minorities and discusses studies to back it up. Which is it? Either they are just words and they mean nothing or they have really impact. You can't have it both ways. At the very least you have cross over when a child is exposed to a slur.
Personally I think that the author has missed what a swear word really is. While he briefly mentions it in the vary end of the book there is a study that proves swearing can reduce pain. Basically swear words are short cuts to getting adrenalin going. A lot of times we use swearing as a demonstration of our willingness to engage in aggression. This is why we have the reaction we have to swearing in both the positive and negative ways. This would also explain why certain cultures would treat swearing differently then others. Depending on if a culture that values self-reliance or mutual cooperation that would change how the culture would view swearing and the individuals that swear.

I am going to be up front here I only made it a third of the way through the book. So take that into account. The book might be worth it if you can finish it. But for me I hit the limit of my patience with this book. The first chapter of this book was good. Not sure it was connected to the rest of the story except to set up the history of the world but it was a good mix of action and tension.
Then there is the rest of the third I read. The problem that made me drop the book is how the author writes their scenes or doesn't write them as the case may be. They write it like they are a director who is making a movie on a shoe-string budget. What do I mean by that? Well, so much of this book you are being told what happened through dialogue or inner thoughts. The point were I quit was when I thought I was going to finally get to some action. There was the build-up then suddenly the scene ended and I was being told how badly the main character was hurt afterward. Felt like the writer couldn't afford a special effects budget. I wasn't aware that that cost extra in books. There are other points where I felt that scenes got cut out and I am left wondering why stuff wasn't shown.
The second complaint I had was the writer did not show their main character doing anything. There was more than enough of her complaining about her situation but never did they show what she thought the world should be like or her doing anything that might change her situation so she just came off as vary vary whiny. This issue might not have been as big of problem if there had been more of external plot. When I stopped there was still nothing concrete for the characters to try to achieve or any clear motivations. So if you are thinking about this book just be prepared that you are going to need to get past a rough beginning to the book.

This is the second story I have read by this author. This is my favorite of the two. The writing created beautiful imagery in my mind as I listened. I really liked the characters and the themes. The story is a worthy tribute to both the artist and Alice in Wonderland.

Historia
When Mary Shelley visits Lord Byron in the Swiss Alps, she hopes it will be a welcome distraction from her broken heart. Instead, she’s surrounded by enigmatic guests with dangerous secrets. From the moment of her arrival, Mary and the others are forbidden to leave the villa after dark. But tales of feral beasts aren’t the only dangers. John Polidori, a handsome guest, fervently pursues local legends that the dead can rise. When the group plays a game of storytelling, they weave tales of nightmarish ghouls - and Mary learns their harmless stories have the power to conjure.

I stayed up way too late listening to this book.
Revisado: 02-12-21
This book is a fast-paced and suspenseful read. I finished the book in a day. It was hard to put down. It is fascinating blend of semi-historical and gothic elements. While it does take some liberties as far a timeline and events, the characters didn't seem out of place and were a believable portrayal what these real historical figures could have been like and what some of their demons could have been. It doesn't have the problem of a lot of gothic story which is to be slow and drawn out. I like the blending of elements and themes from the Frankenstein and The Vampyre with the personal of struggles of the characters. The narrator did a great job and sound was clear. The author was kind enough to give me a copy of the book to listen to but I feel it would have been well worth a credit.

I am going to recommend that you read past chapter 7 before you judge the book. It took me longer to get into the book because the first couple of chapters seem disjointed and unconnected. They really aren't and the pieces fall into place quickly after about chapter 6 or 7. Once I got past that point in the book I started to get much more engaged with the book.
The world-building in this book was good. While the book can't be treated as a stand-alone book I was pleased to see that the story-line seems to move along and the author brings a lot of elements together quite quickly. The magic system is unique. There is a fairly large cast of characters but I didn't have a problem telling them apart. While I have my favorites I was still interested in the other characters and what they were doing. I am interested in see how the magical abilities of many of these characters play out through the rest of the series. I would like to see the character mature over the course of the series.
The narrator is a good job. He reads slightly faster than the average reader but I felt that it wasn't a big deal. I started this series because the author was kind enough to give me a code for the first book. I will be keeping my eye out for the rest of the series and will be purchasing them when they comes out.

I enjoyed this book. It has a definite Wrinkle in Time vibe to it but in a good way. There is the half-science half-magic element to it that reminds you of Wrinkle in Time. The characters were likable and the world was unique. Not the most action heavy book but still keeps your attention. The narrator did an excellent job with this book.

First there was the mystery of the film star and the diamond...then came the "suicide" that was murder...the mystery of the absurdly cheap flat...a suspicious death in a locked gun room...a million-dollar bond robbery...the curse of a pharaoh's tomb...a jewel robbery by the sea...the abduction of a prime minister...the disappearance of a banker...a phone call from a dying man...and finally, the mystery of the missing will. What links these fascinating cases? Only the brilliant deductive powers of Hercule Poirot!

As far as I can tell all of these short stories are included in the The Early Cases of Hercule Poirot collection. So if you have already purchased that book you have the 14 stories in this collection. Might still be worth getting for the more polished performance though.

Historia
In the pantheon of serial killers, Belle Gunness stands alone. She was the rarest of female psychopaths, a woman who engaged in wholesale slaughter, partly out of greed but mostly for the sheer joy of it. Between 1902 and 1908, she lured a succession of unsuspecting victims to her Indiana “murder farm". Some were hired hands. Others were well-to-do bachelors. All of them vanished without a trace.

Solid book on a historic crime
Revisado: 08-07-18
I was unfamiliar the the story before listening to this book. The author did a good job with presenting the story without the need to embellish the case. I did like that the author quotes newspapers and people at the time. The book does a good job of giving you a sense of the effects of the crimes on the country at the time.
