I liked reading the life story of a man who had to overcome great obstacles to succeed in life, which he did through his own efforts and ability and the (determined) guidance of several family members as well as supportive encouragers along the way.

Inspiriting. Portrays values worth imitating. Nip-and-tuck situations, incredible challenges for story’s heroes. Gripping suspense and intensity and little let up. Took me back to stories I’d loved in my youth and the pace got me moving on my daily tasks!!

His life story told by a humble, tough-minded rea
list. BT Washington’s achievements on behalf of his race could justly be considered the equivalent of those of the more famous, beloved Washington. They are both examples of perseverance, endurance, and humility.

I knew very little about George Marshall, so I found this biography enlightening and interesting. The authors bend over backward to be absolutely objective, not to make Marshall, nor indeed any of the military or political leaders of WWII, look heroic. Marshall comes across as a great man mainly because of his character, his values(perseverance, duty, service, integrity), and his great contribution to the Allies' success in the Atlantic front of the War. The authors, in their efforts to debunk the mythology surrounding Marshall, may err on the side of underestimating his abilities.

I liked hearing the ongoing saga of characters whom I had become fond of through previous audiobooks. The author's books make for great listening as he's such a good storyteller. That said, as a Southern, conservative, heterosexual female, I was initially repelled by the first-person, graphic descriptions of male organs and homosexual love-making. Also, the narrator didn't fit my image of Michael Tolliver whom I'd liked a lot in earlier books. Finally, I didn't like the knee-jerk liberal, political stances and broad-brushed disrespect toward those holding more conservative views. However, for several reasons, I came back to the book and listened all the way to the end. I basically had become fond of the characters and wanted to hear more about their lives. Michael Tolliver as depicted by Maupin is good natured, has a self-deprecating sense of humor, and is devoted to his husband Ben. All the characters are described in a colorful, entertaining, very human way. The interpersonal values prized by the author and exemplified most perfectly in the life of Anna Madrigal are healthy, wholesome values. Finally in a strange way, the first-person narration and overly graphic sex talk, although initially off-putting, provided me with a much greater understanding of the variety of gay life styles and issues.

More Tales of the City has the same great narrator as the first book of the series. It's light, funny, colorful and heartwarming-- a good antidote to and respite from the serious realities of life. Since I am conservative culturally and politically, I was amazed at finding them entertaining, rather than offensive.
