I love how Dr Anita connected the garden to scripture. It made it come alive (pardon the pun) , especially as I’m a therapist also. It made so much sense. Excellent listen.

Historia
What is autism: a lifelong disability or a naturally occurring form of cognitive difference akin to certain forms of genius? In truth, it is both of these things and more - and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. Wired reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for discovering it, and finds surprising answers to the crucial question of why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years.

Very thorough and informative
Revisado: 11-12-24
If you had questions about the history of how the diagnosis of autism came to be, this is the book for you. I’m glad I listened to the Audible version as it’s quite lengthy but it was so interesting to hear the path the diagnostic process has taken. It’s not a book I would buy to learn how to clinically work with autism but it does provide a strong history to understand how it has become known and to read about the strong biases against it for so long. Very informative.

Historia
Autism therapy typically focuses on ridding individuals of “autistic” symptoms such as difficulties interacting socially, problems in communicating, sensory challenges, and repetitive behavior patterns. Now Dr. Barry M. Prizant offers a new and compelling paradigm: The most successful approaches to autism don’t aim at fixing a person by eliminating symptoms, but rather seeking to understand the individual’s experience and what underlies the behavior. Rather than curb these behaviors, it’s better to enhance abilities, build on strengths, and offer supports.

Great stories
Revisado: 08-22-24
I appreciated all the stories he shared about working with clients on the spectrum. His main point, which repeated throughout the entire book, was that being on the spectrum is how certain people experience life and doesn’t need to be ‘fixed’. (I agree, as I’m autistic.) But you can be supportive to help them feel accepted. Definitely recommend.

Historia
We are living in crazy times. Biological men are competing and winning against biological women in sports. The newest Supreme Court justice declined to answer the simple question: “What is a woman?” Record numbers of young Americans now identify as transgender. Sexually explicit materials permeate schools. Pedophiles have rebranded as “minor-attracted persons.” Pastor and bestselling author Voddie T. Baucham Jr. equips Christians to fight back against this pervasive sexual identity ideology and stand firm in biblical truths.

What a powerful resource of information
Revisado: 07-17-24
I stumbled across this book after watching a video that a friend shared with me. I’d never heard of this author before and was interested in his thoughts. I purchased the audio version and began to listen. Within minutes, I sat stunned at the level of information and research being shared. As an LCSW, I’m always interested in evidence-based information concerning social issues. This book illuminated how easily an idea can be ‘highjacked’ for different purposes…quietly and with focused intentionality.
I found his thoroughly-researched stance to have a solid foundation, thus I highly, highly recommend this book.

A Hidden Wholeness is a thoughtful and heartfelt examination of sources and consequences of the alienation we feel when our inner and outer lives become divorced from each other, when external forces pressure us to depart from our soul's true yearnings. The book lifts up the problem of the "divided life", diagnoses its sources, assesses its personal and social costs, and offers a model of community that will help people live with greater integrity and wholeness.

Historia
This intimate memoir reveals the woman inside one of autism’s most prominent figures, Jennifer O'Toole. At the age of 35, Jennifer was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, and for the first time in her life, things made sense. Now, she exposes the constant struggle between carefully crafted persona and authentic existence, editing the autism script with wit, candor, passion, and power. Her journey is one of reverse-self-discovery not only as an Aspie but - more importantly - as a thoroughly modern woman.

A mix of helpful information with a lot of performance
Revisado: 06-13-24
While a fair majority of the book does have helpful information, the overall content seemed to alternate between a self-reporting of her talents and the ways others have consistently misinterpreted how she presents herself (which is always attributed to ASD). As someone on the spectrum myself, who parents three adult kids with autism, I often find that when someone with autism recognizes areas that they could work on to interact with others more adaptively, they make an extreme effort to do the work. Not that they/we try to change our personhood but rather we appreciate discovering how to relate better with others. It’s wonderful to experience authentic connection, and it’s not just neurotypicals who need to notice where adjustments are appropriate - those of us on the spectrum can benefit from adjustments as well. That might be my main issue with her book.
My other concerns were her attaching most eating disorders to being on the spectrum, when not every neurodiverse individual experiences a food disorder, and then, somehow, (unless I misunderstood her reference) she related her experiences to those who had been enslaved. That seemed a bit…far-reaching, as she self-reports a background of privilege.
There were several places in the Audible version I marked to re-listen to as I thought the information was helpful, but I’m not sure how much I would recommend this book as a practical option for families wanting to learn more about autism in general. Since I listened to the book, it seemed she excelled at ‘performing’ the content rather than focusing on making sure it was research-based and replicable. I may try to read her Asperkids book as reviews seem more positive there.

What do you do when you start to feel a shift and must decide if it’s time to make a change? When it comes to navigating big decisions about when to stay and go, how can we know for sure when the time is right? Though we enter and exit many rooms over the course of our life—jobs, relationships, communities, life stages—knowing how and when it’s time to leave is a decision that rarely has a clear answer.

Practical information
Revisado: 05-07-24
While this book felt like a continuation of Emily's previous book, 'The Next Right Thing', it seemed to explore more deeply the actual movements before, during and after a 'room' is either being left or stayed in. Her thorough exploration of considering change from all angles was very practical and her use of metaphors for the process helped my brain to make the content authentic and personal for me. And her narrating the content made it approachable.
The only reason I gave a 4 star rather than a 5 star review was when she used the word 'better' to describe her apparent new theology supporting their reasons for leaving a specific church. Emily seems to be so careful in her choice of wording, and I appreciate that intentionality. She further describes in chapter 10 how important language is to her, so when she chose the word 'better', it felt disconcerting initially. Choosing to leave a church is definitely a very personal process and I applaud her vulnerability and authenticity in describing how her family navigated that...however...I don't applaud the use of the word 'better'. For those who remain in places of worship where people are treated with kindness, love and respect while the Word of God is still preached authentically, I don't feel their beliefs and values should be viewed as somehow less than. Other than this, I found her book to be so helpful with its practical applications and I plan to re-listen to it many more times.
