Good story but predictable
Revisado: 01-14-15
Dusty Rhodes is a great writer and he's written many books but he used some of the same material from other books. I heard the waterfall before thanks Dusty.

Historia
Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries. Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive.

Very confusing
Revisado: 12-26-13
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Anyone who has not read Zane Grey or Louis L'mour
Would you ever listen to anything by Philipp Meyer again?
Not probable
Would you be willing to try another one of the narrators’s performances?
Sure. all narrators were good, just too many in the book.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
It had a great premise, but switching every other chapter to modern times did not please me at all.
Any additional comments?
I have been spoiled by Zane Grey, Louis L'mour and other great story tellers. Simple, entertaining, memorable. This one was not.

Historia
In the early 1870's, the young state of Texas was struggling to survive. Its vast, undeveloped land of over 260 thousand square miles became a haven for the lawless. Murderers, rustlers and renegade bands of hostile Indians and Comanchero roamed the vast wastelands of west Texas with only a narrow river separating them from the sanctuary of Mexico. One group of dedicated lawmen stood between this element and the law-abiding citizenry - the Texas Rangers. This is the story of one of those men.

SHAWGO "DUMB AS A ROCK"
Revisado: 10-18-13
What would have made Shawgo better?
A smarter hero as in his other books, Longhorn for example was great and it had smart heros galore..
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Since there is a book two and the promo has already ruined it, I can only say it will be a hard read if I choose to do so..
Which character – as performed by Gene Engene – was your favorite?
Captain of the Texas
rangers.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Shawgo?
Each time he foolishly left his Lady in jeopardy. When he gave up his gun, when he put the women in jeopardy again and again.
Any additional comments?
Dusty Rhodes is a good writer and the reader Gene Engene is excellent, but this time he made his hero so dumb, giving up his gun to the small town Sheriff, putting Hanna in danger, falling asleep on the job, trying to save a fellow prisoner and getting beaten himself. And from the promo of book two, "it don't get no better"..
