Historia
In The Small and the Mighty, Sharon McMahon proves that the most remarkable Americans are often ordinary people who didn’t make it into the textbooks. Not the presidents, but the telephone operators. Not the aristocrats, but the schoolteachers. Through meticulous research, she discovers history’s unsung characters and brings their rich, riveting stories to light for the first time.

The New York Times wasn’t kidding when they said this is the book that we all should be reading right now.
Revisado: 02-24-25
They will be a few people in this book that you have heard of, but you won’t have heard these particular stories. Most of the people discussed you never knew existed. After each story about each person, I just had to take some time to just think about them and what they did and how they did it and how brave they were before I could move onto the next person. One person really can make a difference. It doesn’t matter how small that difference is every single one of us can make a difference in a positive way. Very interesting book very well written.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

What a wonderful book!
Revisado: 12-04-24
This book was so well written and so interesting. I loved every minute of reading about the lives of these wonderful people on Chicken Hill. The actor reading it is the same man who read the book James, and he is wonderful. What an incredible actor and reader he is. A great reader can make a great book even better and he did.

This book was amazing
Revisado: 11-26-24
The reader was incredible. What a talented actor. I was probably 10 years old when I read Huckleberry Finn and it doesn’t matter if you don’t remember anything about it you will enjoy this book completely. What an imagination this author has and what an incredible way to use that imagination.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Everyone should read this book. I can’t stop thinking about it. I am in awe of people who have gone through this type of abuse and come out the other end and try to help others. She is an amazing young woman.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

This book was fine. Armand and his team saved the world by themselves as usual because they don’t know who to trust and people underestimate Armand as they always do, even though he has saved the world several times, but I liked it!

Historia
In his sleepy Yorkshire town, ex-detective Jackson Brodie is staving off boredom and malaise. His only case is the seemingly tedious matter of a stolen painting. But Jackson soon uncovers a string of unsolved art thefts that lead him down a dizzying spiral of disguise and deceit to Burton Makepeace, a formerly magnificent estate now partially converted into a hotel hosting Murder Mystery weekends.

Confusing, dull, and Jackson Brodie was barely in it
Revisado: 11-12-24
I really like this author and I have liked every other Jackson Brodie book but, wow, I don’t know what happened here. He was basically a minor character in a book with about a million other minor characters that I had a hard time keeping track of. Although her writing is witty as always, I just kept losing the plot and I had to keep re-listening to pages over and over again just to figure out where I was. I did not like this book.

This did not grab me as his first books did
Revisado: 10-29-24
This book has been well reviewed so it might be me, but I didn’t really like it. In his first books, I loved everyone in the Thursday murder club. Every single character was distinct and different and I love them all. I didn’t really like anybody in this book. Most people actually were pretty unlikable. Not for me.

Revisado: 07-07-24
Fascinating from the first to the last page. I really felt like I had a front row seat for everything that happened in the 1960’s . I remember the 1960’s, but hearing all of the personal remembrances made that history come alive. What a writer she is.

Historia
Bill Bryson and his family live in a Victorian parsonage in a part of England where nothing of any great significance has happened since the Romans decamped. Yet one day, he began to consider how very little he knew about the ordinary things of life as he found it in that comfortable home. To remedy this, he formed the idea of journeying about his house from room to room to “write a history of the world without leaving home.”
