Fire this narrator!
Revisado: 03-08-24
I typically like this author, but the stereotypical "whites hate natives" is old and well past its prime. The plot was predictable, as was the ending. Now for the narrator.... Her character voices were annoying and grating, particularly for Winona. Why was her voice like a poorly performed cartoon character, babyish and whiney? All the women had the weird transatlantic accent of old cinema (garbo?). Overall, I'd say skip this book, I wish I hadn't wasted a credit to hear it.

Historia
Olivia Moreland prides herself on discrediting charlatans, particularly the false mediums that flock to London. But when Lord Stephen St. Leger requests her help in investigating an alleged psychic's claims, she can't deny the ominous feeling she has within the walls of his ancient estate - or the intimately familiar connection she has with Stephen himself. The last time he'd called Blackhope Hall home, Stephen had watched as his elder brother claimed both the family title and the woman he loved.

the narrator is annoying
Revisado: 06-30-23
I absolutely loved the story, it was fun and entertaining. The narrator murdered the story, not every sentence has to have an extreme buildup of tone and cadence. He ruined the book for me, I'll never listen to another that he narrates.

Historia
Thirty years ago, Wilde was found as a boy living feral in the woods, with no memory of his past. Now an adult, he still doesn't know where he comes from, and another child has gone missing. No one seems to take Naomi Pine's disappearance seriously, not even her father - with one exception. Hester Crimstein, a television criminal attorney, knows through her grandson that Naomi was relentlessly bullied at school. Hester asks Wilde - with whom she shares a tragic connection - to use his unique skills to help find Naomi.

does the narrator hate women??
Revisado: 01-09-23
I thought the story was ok, but the narrator! Seriously, does he hate women? Every woman he read sounded shrill, b**chy, catty and generally unpleasant. Think Fran Drescher (the Nanny) with rampant PMS and a migraine!
I had trouble following the rambling dialog, particularly when the narrator didn't change voice/ inflection per character, or swapped them back and forth.

ok story
Revisado: 10-11-22
The narrator was very good but the story was lacking. It was heavy on inane details (fat arms, fat legs, fat bums, fat Fat FAT! the author is obsessed with body size) and too light on actual meaty story threads. I'm not sure I'll listen to another book by this author.

i love this author
Revisado: 06-06-22
The narrator is terrible, she doesn't change inflection for internal vs. external dialog. And the real killer was listening to the OVER emphasis of the "t" at the end of words and sentences. It was so aggressive i was expecting to get spit on...

Historia
Caroline Overington's stunning fiction debut is a multi-voiced novel centred around a child's death and its terrible repercussions. In 1982 Victorian police were called to a home on a housing estate an hour west of Melbourne. There, they found a five-year-old boy lying still and silent on the carpet. There were no obvious signs of trauma, but the child, Jacob, died the next day. The story made the headlines, and hundreds attended the funeral. Few people were surprised when the boy's mother and her boyfriend went to prison for the crime.

good first few chapters then turns to crap
Revisado: 02-15-22
The concept of the book is really interesting and the 1st few chapters went well. Then when we go forward in time it's all a bunch of crap. Very vulgar, porn like descriptions, Far too much sexualization That didn't add anything to the story or the ending.. I'm all 4 good sex scenes, but they have to be appropriate to the storyline and make sense. I would give this book negative stars if I could for the story, the narration was well done but not enough to compensate. I do not recommend.

I've loved every story by this author... but
Revisado: 10-28-21
BUT... Natalie Gold is not a good narrator. Her speaking is too wet, it was irritating to listen to and she will frequently speak through swallowing. I'm very disappointed by this because I love ALL of Marillir's books.
