Historia
Author Joni B. Cole worries that Vlad the Impaler may be a distant cousin. She feuds with a dead medium. She thinks (or overthinks) about insulting birthday cards, power trips, and the real reason writers hate Amazon. And she wishes, really wishes, all those well-meaning people would stop talking about Guatemala. At once irreverent and thought provoking, Cole's collection is a joy ride through eclectic essays that arrive smack on that sweet spot between soul searching and social commentary, between humor and heft.

So funny!
Revisado: 02-25-24
Joni Cole’s essays are pithy, relatable, and so funny. I love her keen observations of people and herself. She is lovingly human and snarky in the best way. The essays are smart, compelling, true to how we all feel but don’t always want to admit to!

Historia
Raised on a hard-knock farm in Arkansas and married off to the widowed father of one of her classmates at the age of thirteen, Augusta was not set up for a life of bliss. Abandoned by her second husband in 1920's Detroit, with four children to provide for, she is forced into a decision that will haunt her forever.

Touching treatment of woman making it on her own as a single mother of 4. Historical details are beautifully written. Story is compelling.

Historia
In Manhattan, a young grad student gets off the train and realizes he doesn't remember who he is, where he's from, or even his own name. But he can sense the beating heart of the city, see its history, and feel its power. In the Bronx, a Lenape gallery director discovers strange graffiti scattered throughout the city, so beautiful and powerful it's as if the paint is literally calling to her. In Brooklyn, a politician and mother finds she can hear the songs of her city, pulsing to the beat of her Louboutin heels.

Excellent everything! Great story, great narrator!
Revisado: 04-15-21
The narrator did a first class job bringing the characters to life and bringing this powerful, funny, exciting story by NK Jemisin to life. I am recommending Jemisin’s books and this audible version to everyone I know!
