Historia
In the opening pages of Jamie Ford's stunning debut, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle's Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.

A sweet story about nothing
Revisado: 11-27-24
I really wanted to like this book but it never happened. The pace was waaayyyy too slow. Much of the asides dipping into the lives of the many characters did nothing to advance a plot, was there a plot? It was a long and slow journey into nothing.

Historia
Between her dad’s pest-control company, her mom’s pond-cleaning service, and her side gig at Caddysnack (Santa Barbara’s premier small plates and minigolf destination), Hallie Mayhew puts the “work” in working class. But Hal has qualms about gassing gophers, she’s tired of ditching friends to skim dead fish from fountains, and she’s freaking weary of divorced-parent politics. So she has a plan: win the prestigious Verhaag Scholarship, go to an east-coast school, never come back.

A whole lotta vapid
Revisado: 05-23-24
This might be of interest to a teenagers but not really an adult read. You can hear the author writing is the best way to describe it. A little too much of the dramatic, the precious and the cute. A lot of the scenarios were not logical or believable.

Horrible Book
Revisado: 04-26-23
I seem to be on a planet of my own with this opinion but not only was the main character’s personality so horrible that it made me not care what happens to her but that also made it impossible to read. The main narrator is also just really bad!

HORRID
Revisado: 06-03-21
At first I thought it was the horrible narration that was making the story so irritating so I ordered the book to read it only to realize the novel itself is vapid, redundant and boring. None of the characters or the dialogue ring true. WHO snarks back during a police interview? Apparently Backman thinks that everyone does. None of the characters do anything but harass each other. The moments of clever humor are lost in all the distraction of the fake sounding dialogue. I could go on about the horrible narration but maybe the biggest head scratcher are the thousands of good reviews.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

A nice but not believable story
Revisado: 07-01-19
The of language of this book is wonderful but relied too often on the descriptions of the marsh and Kyra narrating poems making it overly sentimental and sappy. Kyra's character was incredibly one dimensional and it was frustrating to hear her thought process. The entire half of the book that dealt with the trial rings false as no such trial would have EVER taken place in ANY court in the US even back in 1970 based on such circumstantial evidence. The narrator in this story did not do the author any favors as her delivery of all of the male characters sounded like the same character.

She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times...and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, mother, their teenaged son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn't, her world begins to crumble. And its shocking secrets are laid bare.

Unbelievably bad
Revisado: 02-05-19
I could not figure out WHY this story was so shrill and trite and overly false seeming, with the ridiculous dialogue and the female characters so wooden until I read that the actual author, under a pseudonym here, is actually a con-MAN of large degree named Dan Mallory. The New Yorker and other newspapers have done stories on him recently (2019).

Good story, horrible narration
Revisado: 08-07-17
I'm not sure what style the narrator of Jame's character is attempting but it comes across as wooden and unskilled. So much so that it becomes irritating and distracting to the story.
