Historia
Originally published in 1985, Outposts is Simon Winchester's journey to find the vanishing empire, "on which the sun never sets". In the course of a three-year, 100,000 mile journey - from the chill of the Antarctic to the blue seas of the Caribbean, from the South of Spain and the tip of China to the utterly remote specks in the middle of gale-swept oceans - he discovered such romance and depravity, opulence and despair that he was inspired to write what may be the last contemporary account of the British empire.

Fun to listen to. Good characters and interesting story. It was a bit too stereotypical. A lot of predictable story lines, but entertaining and the narrator was great.

Historia
Kensington Palace is now most famous as the former home of Diana, Princess of Wales, but the palace's glory days came between 1714 and 1760, during the reigns of George I and II. In the 18th century, this palace was a world of skullduggery, intrigue, politicking, etiquette, wigs, and beauty spots, where fans whistled open like switchblades and unusual people were kept as curiosities. Lucy Worsley's The Courtiers charts the trajectory of the fantastically quarrelsome Hanovers and the last great gasp of British court life.

Just okay

I kept waiting for this book to go somewhere but it remained very superficial and didn’t really bring the subjects alive. Covered interesting subjects but but but maybe too many subjects at once. The narrator left a lot to be desired.

A very long unremarkable book. Very formulatic and characters seemed bland. I will try another Archer book but this one seems written for a bad tv show with a meandering plot and an ending that just peters out.

Take away some helpful advice
Revisado: 01-14-22
I think the message of this book is that you are not alone as you age. You have to maintain a good mental state and a positive attitude. There is some good information to take away, but a lot of it is common sense and way too simplistic. Her advice about weight and body fat was annoying because she kept talking about wanting to be skinny and dealing with belly fat instead of working towards having a good body image and not comparing yourself to others. Overall, her message about having a positive attitude was good advice.

Historia
Remarkably little is known about the European eel, Anguilla anguilla. So little, in fact, that scientists and philosophers have, for centuries, been obsessed with what has become known as the “eel question”: Where do eels come from? What are they? Are they fish or some other kind of creature altogether? Even in our age of advanced science, no one has ever seen eels mating or giving birth, and we still don’t understand what drives them, after living for decades in freshwater, to swim great distances back to the ocean at the end of their lives. They remain a mystery.

Learned all about eels
Revisado: 01-13-22
Great pretext for a book and narrator was very good but it was really a collection of essays covering the same ground. It was hard to make it to the end because it got a bit boring, though I do have a new appreciation for eels.

Maybe good for young adult book?
Revisado: 12-09-21
All the characters are superficial, the plot is full of holes and the mystery is very simplistic. The girl breaks her collar bone and becomes addicted the opium. Despite the fact she takes opium on every other page, only she can solve the mystery of her sisters death from a vampire bite. She can think clearly and the extreme pain from a broken bone is no problem. Her mother and grandmother are over her sister’s death the next day and the police aren’t going to investigate a mysterious death of a young girl whose blood is sucked dry. The narrator has two voices, and everyone besides the main character sounds like a raspy old guy. Pretty lame
