Historia
At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....

This is even better with a copy of the print book
Revisado: 08-14-24
I have multiple degrees, and I love reading a print book along with Audible books. Why do I do this? I do not know, but I read this many years ago and reading along with Audible helped me make sense of a few words. But it is more than that-- I think that reading and listening at the same time is a deeper way of enjoying a book.
"The Hiding Place" was a life changer for me when I came upon her story of thanking God for the fleas in the concentration camp, as Betsie insisted they thank God for all things, which included the fleas. Corrie lived a life of contemplation and recognized her own little sins which, once she identified them, could quash them and become closer to God and show his love even more. Corrie is a light, and her stories can be applied to our own lives (may they never be close to what she suffered!)
I am religious and of a more liturgical branch of Christianity than Corrie was. (Don't tell my clergy this, folks!) While I have heard my own clergy preach forgiveness, it is in reading Corrie's personal account of surviving WWII that made me understand what it means to forgive, and to being open for recognizing miracles. Corrie and Betsie, through their stories, are still sharing Christ and showing compassion.

Just not for me
Revisado: 06-05-23
I found the narrator's voice grating. I got through a couple of chapters. It is clever and cute, but it seems like something that only a well-known writer could get away with writing. As an editor I would have grimaced and sent this back.
This being said, a lot of people will like this and they will be better off for having listened to it and learned the mythology from this perspective because they will grow up and take classes that will teach them the original stories and they will have a background to learn more.

A "new" facet of WWII literature
Revisado: 05-08-23
I have been a fan of WWII stories both fiction and nonfiction since I was ten years old and read the Diary of Anne Frank. I have read stories of all the ethnic groups and countries except for Germany. I didn't know if I would like this, but I did. This is a braided narrative of several people and families, starting in Prussia. On the way of listening to it, I did searches on the war and what was happening. The author acknowledges that she took artistic licence, and everything she said kind of works with the timeline (she edited for flow of the story, which is permissible.) I learned a lot with reading this, but most important, I learned that what lead up to WWII. Some of the characters were not falling for Hitler's propaganda, but to speak out would get them killed and it wouldn't help anything. Some characters were falling for the propaganda, but when they realized it, it was too late and to speak out was treason. Everyone in this suffers-- it is a given. I was as heartbroken for the Prussians as I have been for other victims. Hunger and death are terrible for everyone just trying to survive.
Janusz's story was the most compelling. He was the Polish slave laborer. There were times that the story was too much but I hung on for his.
The story does not end neatly, it is sad, and characters are refined and reach the end of their story arcs at different points. Not everyone dies. I like this because it is based on one real-life character (the author explains at the end.) I am a better person for having listened to this book. A bit sadder, maybe, but still a better person.

With Romania recently allied with the Nazis, the Jewish population is in grave danger, undergoing increasingly violent persecution. The girl is placed in an orphanage and eventually adopted by a wealthy, childless couple who name her Natalia. It flows like a soap opera
Revisado: 11-15-22
I expected to like this-- it is Romanian and I am familiar with the area and her history. The book seems well researched. The narrator's voice is breathy and grates on me. Her accents, particularly of the child, "Thank you, Papa!" might be accurate, but she almost sounded hokey to me.
Everything I was told to not do in my creative writing class, Roxanne Veletzos does. She is cliche and predictable. I started finishing off sentences as the story went on.
Not all books are right for everyone. This is not right for me. I will try this author again.

An honored place on history lovers' shelves
Revisado: 10-31-22
Kristina Wenger is the voice of Princess Ileana. I love her narration.
The Princess tells us history to explain her circumstances and shares to politics-- no taking sides, simply what was happening. What is most interesting to me right now is how she shares what was happening when the Russians were coming in. Not even their own soldiers were excited when Russia maneuvered to take tiny Romania. Then there were the conversations with Anna Pauker, and the Russian placed leader, Bodnaras. They give us great insight into what was happening as the Russians were taking over. and how they did it.
As a religious person, Princess Ileana is much loved in Orthodox circles and her life story is one of boldness and bravery in the face of adversity. She is a light to us still.

I did not want to quit listening
Revisado: 08-17-22
There is no such thing as "just another holocaust book". In our challenging times, these books remind us that we can overcome and if we don't that there are things worth fighting for. It was hard to stop listening but it was also hard to keep going sometimes because of the intensity. I would have to switch to another book.
This took us into Poland, which was a little different than many books. And the main character's naivete puts her into some precarious situations. There are many messages in the book-- never give up, some battles are worth fighting for or fighting for even if in doing so might cause you great loss, help comes from unexpected sources... I appreciate this.
The most interesting part was the final chapter where the author tells us the outcomes to everyone's lives-- I did not know that there was severe antisemitism after WWII in Poland, and this had an impact on the survivors.

On January 17, 1913, alone and near starvation, Douglas Mawson, leader of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, was hauling a sledge to get back to base camp - the dogs were gone. Mawson plunged through a snow bridge, dangling over an abyss by the sledge harness. A line of poetry gave him the will to haul himself back to the surface. On February 8, when he staggered back to base, his features unrecognizable, the first teammate to reach him blurted out, "Which one are you?"

Great story but they were horrible to their dogs
Revisado: 06-27-22
I enjoyed this story-- the narration got to be a little dry so from time to time I needed to listen to something else. Don't get me wrong--- Mathew Brenher did a great job, but his voice is distinct and after a bit I needed something else.
The story reveals much about the attitudes of the time towards dogs (so easy to shoot them, or feed pups to the team) and other animals (soldiers were fond of picking up penguins and throwing them into the water). I know it was par for the course at the time, that they were on an exploration, that food was a resource, but I cheered the dogs who ran away, and didn't feel bad for the explorers when bad things happened to them.

As Zabelle's family assembles for her funeral in present-day Massachusetts, it becomes clear that her children hardly knew her. But as this alternatively comic and heartbreaking novel unfolds - beginning with Zabelle's survival of the 1915 Armenian Genocide in Turkey and her subsequent emigration to America for an arranged marriage - an unforgettable character emerges.

This is shockingly relatable
Revisado: 06-12-22
I bought this book because I had read about Zabelle Panosian, an Armenian-American soprano, on social media and it is not about her at all. By the time I realized that this wasn't her story, I was too invested in the characters.
I am culturally an American who started reading about the Armenian genocide due to a family member marrying an Armenian. This is one of many books that I have purchased. While the book is fiction, I feel like "the story is true". What Zabelle the fictitious character experienced was what millions of Armenians and refugees experienced. Family relationships, interactions with Turks, finding a husband, mother-in-law, son, and new wife dynamics-- these are real and not made up.
There are no loose ends in this work. Where there are relationships, they and the issues get resolved. The reviews on Amazon state the geographical and basics, but what I want to add is that as a mom, I relate to Zabelle's observations on parenting and relationships with her children and grandchildren. There are parts of this book where I cried, and a few times I laughed so hard that my family ran to where I was and wanted to know the joke (it is stuff that moms with adult children understand.) Aspects of her shenanigans with her BFF are true enough to feel real, and could have inspired I Love Lucy skits-- her BFF's rapid responses were great. Zabelle's mother in law is an awful person, but as the book goes on, you start to understand how her circumstances during the terrible times molded her personality-- if she were alive I would be (kindly!) telling her a thing or two so her trauma response when safe could be put at ease. We learn about cultural abuse-- and why we never want to go back to the era. There are aspects of Armenian culture from the 1900s that we learn, and this is written about very well. We get taken through the rest of the century.
Now I am sitting in my dining room with that feeling that my book is over and the characters are still with me. I am a fan of Russian literature and history, and WWII-- the Armenian genocide survivors deserve to have their stories told to the world, even if, due to time, we just get information from their children and grand children. I hope that publishers will scour old Armenian books and ask families for permission to reprint them in English.

The life of a princess isn’t all fun-filled travel, magnificent banquets, handsome princes, and beautiful clothes. It’s also devotion to duty, sacrifice for your people, and a lot of just plain hard work. And if your country happens to suffer two world wars and a Communist takeover in your lifetime, it means danger and suffering, exile and heartache as well.

This shows us more...
Revisado: 02-22-22
I enjoy listening to Kristina Wenger narrate Princess Illeana books. To me, her voice is that of the Princess. This book is good-- I have listened to the other books.
I agree with a few other posters who mention in their reviews that her life as a child being so obedient and good is hard to believe. but I am willing to believe this aspect of her because life was different for the daughter of a king and queen at the start of the last century than it is now. Ileana was tight with Queen Marie and she wanted to please her mother (and she did and the queen was a loving mother who reciprocated that love). She stresses her duty above all else-- she was a (second?) cousin to the future Queen Elizabeth II, after all-- and this was drilled into her from an early age.
Something else-- this book elaborates on the importance of religious traditions that Ileana knew that she wanted to pass on. Americans had lost the understanding of the importance of monasteries and church Traditions, and this is discussed. It also tells us more about what was happening with Ileana's family in WWI, after the Armistice was signed in Germany and the Red Cross leaving Romania, her relationship with her elder brother Carol I, her marriages and divorces, details about her time in the convent in France and her tonsuring, her time as Mother Alexandra at the convent she founded, her family life with her own children. Her friends as she was growing up. All these concepts help us understand more of what made her as a princess and as a person.
Someone wanting to learn more about the Orthodox church could learn much from this book-- but they need to enjoy historical stories. This is not a scholarly piece about the princess or the Orthodox church, it is someone's story and who lived her faith.
I only wish this had attachments of photos of Princess Ileans's life and Mother Alexandra's tonsuring, but it is a good sign that I have finished the book and wanted more.
I listened to this on the eve of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Hearing of her struggles and faith has helped me stay focused in my own prayers and worries.

Ileana has always collected stories. Some are about the past, before the leader of her country tore down her home to make room for his golden palace; back when families had enough food, and the hot water worked on more than just Saturday nights. Others are folktales like the one she was named for, which her father used to tell her at bedtime. But some stories can get you in trouble, like the dangerous one criticizing Romania’s Communist government that Uncle Andrei published - right before he went missing.

It is worth your time to listen to this
Revisado: 12-20-21
I first read this at my local library and decided to listen to it while I knitted. It is easy to follow while reminding the listener/reader of history. I am a little bit familiar with Romania's history, having read and listened to "I Live Again: A Memoir of Ileana, Princess of Romania and Archduchess of Austria". With these being the two books that I have read about Romania I feel like I got the start and end of a Very Bad Time for the country.
As a child who came of age during the Cold War, this answered questions that I had about why the people never rose up to fight the government control and told us of what life was like during the Soviet era. The concrete block apartments were mentioned that we all had seen in the west of the Eastern Bloc, as well as comments of the collectivizing of land and properties.
I felt that at times the reader got overly dramatic, but the book is dramatic. Sometimes I had to turn it off for a bit before I went back to it-- it wasn't bad, I was feeling sucked into the chaos.
As a student of folklore, I appreciated this for Ileana's references to stories and touching on folk belief.
