Awesome listen for a road trip. It is as mesmerizing as it is educating. Buy it.

This is a personal, yet scholarly narrative on the historicity of a lost people. You have to remember that this thesis, written like a love letter, is, in the end, largely the conjectures of one people— the Europeans— about another, the “Anasazi”. Craig Childs works to erase this gulf of time and culture, through long marches across the desert, as would’ve an Anasazi, a thousand years ago. Craig manages to make you get to know and love his illusion, ghostly subjects. And you become friends with him, and perhaps his infant some too.

A “self-help”, motivational book of sorts, this tome delivers in every way. There is no needed warm up time— you’re absorbed no sooner than you have started listening. From there, on to the last word, the book delivers insights and inspiration. You will be glad you came across this in your literary journey and, many years thence you’ll likely still harbor warm gratitude for its dual gifts of substance and soul.

SPOLIER ALERT

I found the plot labored, and the narration tiresome. Not the best effort by Mr. Grisham. Long a fan, in some cases to the point of obsession, I find this work uninspired, even trivial. It is not about the potentially controversial topic— that of southern white institutions harboring prejudice against poor black males. Hey, I am a minority male, who nurses an actual secret fear of unfair retribution at the hands of the law, should I unwittingly stray into an unfortunate situation. I HAVE been wrongfully arrested and processed, my white lawyer later expressing shock that a misdemeanor could land an otherwise upstanding citizen in jail. And I am a rich Indian (from India). I can only imagine what’d have happened if I was a poor black male!

(My infraction— picking up a business colleague outside La Guardia, as did 200 other motorists. Only the colored ones got police attention. I was not supposed to be pulled over curbside as my boss got into the car.)

The plot is unrealistic, and overly complicated (did we really need to go into EIGHT different cases in one story?). The narrator — why is everyone hoarse, with a scratchy voice these days? I am not asking for artificially sonorous timbre, but how about an everyman sound— like Paul Riser, Jake Tapper, or Magdalena Cordova?

This is intellectual husk. A book written merely because there are empty spaces on bookshelves begging for pretentious adornments. Boring efflatus mixed with vapid contumely to spew inchoate logorhea. Yes, like that. It is as tedious as it is unnecessary. The book is dishonest— where it should inspire, it enervates, where it should extol, it excoriates, where it should enlighten, it obfuscates. The reader, listener in our case, is left discouraged and drained. This book is a disaster. I wish I got my money, my time, my joy back. Do not buy this flaccid attempt at encephalic vitality.

“You meet the author in the pages of his work”. As someone who has listened to ZMM numerous times, the need to know more— about the author, and about the dramatized motorcycle trip— this is an invaluable work. Thank you to Mark for the effort and for the excellent book.

The narration grates on you, and the plot line insults your intelligence. Pitifully lacking in interest or substance.
