the answer to burnout from is not, not working. In order for a society to move beyond "work" they have to work in order to accomplish it. Circular reasoning, improper use of social science, and a socialistic ideal makes me wonder if the author really had any interest in understanding work in it's possible forms before calling for an irrational and fantastic end to work. Most accurate thing the author describes is misaligned ideals being leveraged against employees, but the context and history, are wrong and supposed solutions are only possible if someone else works, so the answer is to shift the blame and responsibility to someone else....

thanks, but no thanks

Review 2022, Definitely a pre-covid book. Half of the strategies were built on paradigms that no longer exist and have changed at an extremely fast rate.

Should have been called "deep work for academics"

The idea that "knowledge workers" are producing value, due only to the depth of knowledge with which they bring, which can only be found in isolation, exposes his limitation and his understanding of work, economics, workplace dynamics, management, and a host of other disciplines relating to the workplace. He does not touch a concept of isolation within groups, highly specialized teams of Unique Individuals that can collaborate to produce truly outstanding results (example being the team that put together the SR-71 Blackbird 50 years ago). I think it's the logical conclusion that both individual isolation and group isolation must be addressed and he does not address this at all.

The concept of "Deep Work" unintentionally got defined as an internal quest through the reaches of one's own mind, in isolation, to produce original thoughts. The love of self and narcissism that this strategy employs is truly outstanding!

The whole book takes less than a few hours to get through, and while mind games and tricks in the later chapters may help young individuals manage their time, and help them focus, this book is hardly more than a really long article on eliminating distractions.

Maybe some follow up and later editions will expand the effort.
