This story is just fine. Kind of for cavemen who think they’re smart
Revisado: 01-22-25
Knew the wife was going to get fridges within the first sentence of meeting her.
The writing is sometimes quite nice.
The story fits the world the author created, and it was compelling enough to finish. But predictable. A story that little boys imagining themselves to be big bad Greek warriors, but also Jedi might tell themselves as they play-fight around the playground. Not very sophisticated, but taking itself very seriously as a philosophical meditation.
Multiple highly unnecessary rapes of women who in theory are also highachieving warriors? But the women are raped (men are never sodomized) and the rapists are not injured by the women. the MC defines what Justice. (at least they’re not in-text. But like. MULTIPLE?)
Things I liked: the background of corporate greed running a country. The way everyone suffers (not just the lows) under the system. The fact that women are (at times) included in the warrior class as peers.
Also, I do think that the writing itself was quite nice. At times poetic. Nice rhythm and resonances across chapters. This is kind of the opposite of many books where the plot is what draws you in, but with mediocre writing.
Performance of the audiobook was lovely. Loved the accents— I think they added a lot. But I did have to skip the singing.

Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Good story, but not very original, and annoyingly slow in places
Revisado: 06-25-23
This book was written by an author who previously wrote romance and erotica, and it shows. The fantasy elements are incredibly derivative. I was able to predict all the major end-of-book twists from the first pages. The plot and characters read like a list of tropes. Starting abojt halfway thru, there’s REALLY LONG sex scenes. Really really long. Similarly, several of the fight and action scenes take weird detours of interiority which cut against the action in a way that I did not enjoy. Overall the book was compelling despite its predictability— it feels like rereading a book you’ve forgotten a bit.
The narrator has a cold, and esp at the beginning of the story, it’s reallllly noticeable and unpleasant. Eventually I either stopped noticing, or she got better.

Helpful little nuggets

Some of these pep talks are very nice, some a bit bleh, some analytical, some emotional. But overall it’s a nice range, short chapters, and easy listening.

Fine.. just fine
Revisado: 04-23-22
It’s a fine book. Not my favorite, wouldn’t really recommend. The characters are a bit one-note and there are times I literally skipped whole minutes because of needless “suspense” where people are talking around the point. But it was still an interesting story and world and I’m going to read the sequel.

Disappointing
Revisado: 11-19-21
This book is 95% sex and intimacy. Which is not what the first in the series was. Truly all just filler here. I kept waiting for PLOT which was hinted at and teased at but never truly delivered. And maybe in the few instances it was delivered, it was truly not enough to support the excess of nothing in between. also, maybe just because of the way the courts in hell work, but she looses her personality. She’s just a doll of other peoples feelings, and it gets way boring way fast

Fun ending, fast read
Revisado: 10-06-21
Super fun ending, fast read.
(Spoilers)
Because Nirrin spends /all/ of the book as her heartless self, this book has a bit less emotional impact, a bit less romance. Everything t Sid does is for the memory of who Nirrin was. But because of the distance between us readers and the action, this was a very quick read. And I loved the closer look at Sid’s POV.

I can’t put my finger quite on why I didn’t live for this story— maybe because the morality of certain activities was never really settled? Maybe because the characters seem easily swayed from their goals? Maybe because it feels like it’s trying really hard to be relatable? this is a story. It’s a fine one. I won’t be returning to it.

Genuinely so boring and bad
Revisado: 01-27-21
I gave this book a shot. I really did. I waited 8 hours for something to happen. But she just sits in a library. She exercises. She does some yoga. She goes grocery shopping. She has a to do list. She makes an omelet and a glass of tea. Other characters play chess. Eat dinner. And also sit in the library. And there’s so much narrating. It’ll be like “our eyes met. It reminded me of ..” and then it’s like 20 minutes before we get back to the scene where their eyes have met like jeeezys. And also it’s dumb. Like a dumb plot really. Everyone wants this book but.. she doesn’t have it!!! Also I am a PhD student who focuses on history and myth, and the descriptions of her doing research are excruciating. She’s normative, like she looks at ancient stuff and says if it’s right or wrong. Fundamentally, a misunderstanding of what historians and art historians and people who study myths do? We’re not like. Hmm this piece of ancient art is wrong?????? A historian finding an ancient text or piece of art that’s different would say “wow, why is this different. When would the myths/artistic depictions have diverged. Why did this version of the myth/art become less popular” anyway. That happens in almost the first scene and it killed me but I was like no, this book has so many good ratings, I’ll push thru. But I should have trusted my gut and cut my losses. 0/10. would NOT recommend. Don’t waste your money. Don’t waste your time. The narrator was fine, I like her other stuff.
