engaging, historically valuable
Revisado: 09-02-23
Engaging, not too deep in character development but a fun read.
I think it is also important to remember that not all stories need to be deep or complex. Sometimes, a simple story can be just as powerful, especially if it is told well. Clark and Division may not have been the most groundbreaking fiction story ever told, but the historical and contextual value makes it a worthwhile story that deserves to be told.
The author clearly did her research and made sure to get the details and the lingual references right, which helped to make the writing feel authentic. These stories can help us to understand the challenges and triumphs of this community, and help us appreciate their contributions to American history.
The narration lacked drama and may have taken away from the authentic feel of the writing.

Started off well
Revisado: 04-24-23
This book started off well and I appreciated the detailed information on early indicators and what to look for in bloodwork. As the book progressed I realized how biased the author was, and how slanted his conclusions were, making suggestions for the general population when they were really mostly for his own self and body type. Some unwise conclusions he drew were saying consumption of trans fats don’t really directly affect longevity, or ones cholesterol is not really affected by what one consumes.
As an athlete who has studied and tried many diets I didn’t appreciate the author’s bias toward keto and other low carb, high fat diets, and his veering away from long term fasting for most people.
I stared off really liking the author but definitely disagreed and fizzled out ion recommending the latter chapters. Better advice can be found from broader resources with more experience in these areas.

Historia
On any given night, more than half a million Americans and Canadians find themselves sleeping on the streets, in shelters, cars, and other places not meant for human habitation. Yet as this crisis continues to grow, it remains one of the least talked about—especially in churches. Kevin Nye introduces listeners to the Christ he’s met in tents, shelters, and drop-in centers. He demystifies homelessness by journeying into complex issues like affordable housing, mental illness, addiction, and more, while reimagining our theological approach to these matters.

A poignant Christian message for our times
Revisado: 10-11-22
I loved the author's integrity in approaching a heated issue even among Christians and how we ought to deal with the unhoused population in our midst. Nye writes of wanting to live out the Scriptures but finding that not to be a traditional ordination path to pastoring within the church walls, but taking a prophetic role of ministering to the community and living among the unhoused street population. He challenges traditional misinterpretations of Scripture passages that Christians use as platitudes and disengaged attitudes when helping the needy.
All in all, a great book that I am already recommending to friends.

Good book, horrible narration
Revisado: 11-20-21
I also listened to another book on Pelosi so couldn't help comparing. I liked the history given describing generations leading up to Pelosi's ascent. I was just so bothered by the poor pronunciation and sing-song voice of the narrator that placed emphases on the wrong parts of sentences that it was hard to complete the audiobook, but I persevered because of my interest in the person of Nancy Pelosi and the author's point of view.

Great book, unbearable to listen to
Revisado: 09-16-14
What made the experience of listening to A New History of Christianity in China the most enjoyable?
Daniel Bays did a great job in providing a continuous narrative to the story of the Christian church in China. I did not realize the different streams had affected China at various points in history, and it is interesting to note how big a part the Christian church played in China at times, and then how it seemed to be snuffed out at others.
What other book might you compare A New History of Christianity in China to and why?
I have not read such a comprehensive book on this specific topic, and I suppose I am not enough of a history buff to say I look for this kind of narrative in other cultures.
What about Christine Marshall’s performance did you like?
Although her English was expressive and easy to follow, her Chinese names and proper nouns were truly horrible. Even common Chinese places and names were made so unrecognizable when she pronounced them, it was really unbearable. I have had this experience with many English-read Chinese audiobooks, and you really should get someone who knows Chinese and at least do a voiceover for the Chinese words. I had to get the written copy as well, because there was no way I could get all the facts and names from hearing her read.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not to be read in one sitting unless you are already a master at this topic. For me it was a lot of new information that I wanted to digest slowly.
Any additional comments?
Great job by the author.

Historia
Thailand, Laos, and Burma have been known as the "Golden Triangle" because of their historically prominent role in the drug trade. For centuries, these countries have produced the opium that has attracted traders from Europe and elsewhere. Economics, religion, and politics combine to make this area not only important but also, to the western mind, exotic.

What made the experience of listening to The Golden Triangle the most enjoyable?
There are very few books or audiobooks out there on the history or issues in Southeast Asia. I appreciated the content of this book. If you have any interest in the history of this region I think the content and performance are very good.

this book inspired me to go to Greece. Content was reflective: 2 women going through change. I enjoy Sue Monk Kidd's writing and was glad I read it.

Historia
Caesar Augustus has been called history's greatest emperor. It was said he found Rome made of clay and left it made of marble. With a senator for a father and Julius Caesar for a great-uncle, he ascended the ranks of Roman society with breathtaking speed. His courage in battle is still questioned yet his political savvy was second to none. He had a lifelong rival in Mark Antony and a 51-year companion in his wife, Livia. And his influence extended perhaps further than that of any ruler who has ever lived.

What made the experience of listening to Augustus the most enjoyable?
Certainly brought to life the characters. I happened to be in Rome during the listen so it really deepened my experience of the city and ruins. I am not a history buff so I do not know if all facts are true but it was certainly very believable. Enjoyed the read very much.
