Historia
Eighty-one-year-old widow Maggie Burkhardt came to the Royal Karnak to escape. But not in quite the same way as most other guests who are relaxing at this hotel on the banks of the Nile. Maggie, a compulsive fixer of other people’s lives, may have found herself in hot water at her last hotel in Switzerland and just might have needed to get out of there fast. But here at the Royal Karnak, under the hot Saharan sun, she has a comfortable suite, a loyal confidante in the hotel manager, Ahmed, and a handful of sympathetic friends. One morning, however, Maggie notices a new arrival at check-in.

Loved the twists and turns, an unreliable protagonist, and a resort in Egypt. Did not like when the old women’s character voice was used as she sounded too weak and stereotypical.

Historia
True-crime podcaster Jess Keeler has returned to Deeton County, North Carolina, to pick up where her grandfather left off. Sheriff’s Deputy Big Jim Ballard, her grandfather, was a respected detective—until it all came crashing down during a 1972 murder investigation. For Jim, solving the murders of two teens should have been the highlight of his already storied career. Instead, he battled his own mind, unsure where his hunches ended and the truth began.

Loved the idea of altering views. Got confused a couple of times. Thought having the disgraced newscaster worked well. Intrigued and hooked by well constructed plot lines. Wanted more out of female protagonist; her backstory, more on her relationships within the family, more on what truly excited her about 2/3 of the way through seemed, to me, to be needed/wanted.

Lee Gulliver never thought she’d find herself living on the streets—no one ever does—but when her restaurant fails, and she falls deeper into debt, she leaves her old life behind with nothing but her clothes and her Toyota Corolla. In Seattle, she parks in a secluded spot by the beach to lay low and plan her next move—until early one morning, she sees a sobbing woman throw herself into the ocean. Lee hauls the woman back to the surface, but instead of appreciation, she is met with fury.

Great fast-paced suspense tale with women who are weak and manipulated growing into who they might be after abuse, trickery, and poor choices where they’re stuck for some time. Nice twists and turns.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

What a journey is this beautifully written novel that traverses tales of three main humans and an octopus. Following the tragic abandonment by a mother, life with a less than ideal aunt we move to a different location where we meet a bright octopus who yearns for mental stimulation and freedom, and we learn of a son lost and a woman alone wishing for connection and hope. These interconnected tales are lively & lovely, but they also speak of yearning and loss. A must read for 2023. Very highly recommend! 5 out of 5 stars.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Wonderful plot, intricate weaving of timelines and transitions. Love the characters who feel like friends. Zeal of a feminist when such passion for a career, in science no less, was almost summarily dismissed. Can’t wait for the next book, whether a continuation or a completely different journey.

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Newlyweds Lina and Cain don’t make it out to their property on gorgeous Lake Tarawera as often as they’d like, so when Cain suggests they rent the house out to vacationers, Lina reluctantly agrees. While the home has been in her family for generations, they could use the extra money. And at first, Lina is amazed at how quickly guests line up, and at how much they’re willing to pay. But both Lina and Cain have been keeping secrets, secrets that won’t be put off by fresh paint or a new alarm system. And someone has been watching them.

Historia
This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

Life, love, friendship, family, joy, & heartbreak
Revisado: 08-27-21
As I stand crying after just finishing this masterpiece, my heart and mind are filled with the entangled lives of Jude, Willem, Harold, Julia, Andy, JB, and more. Yanagihara has written an epic about abuse, not loving, depravity, finding friends, and hope. Yes, trigger warnings for child endangerment, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and self-harm. She also details how gay and heterosexual men can be friends. This is a book that will long stay with me.
