Eye Opening Insight

I don't have the training to know if the author's theory on obesity is true. It fits with with my experience in losing weight and the successes and difficulties I've had. I am now trying this and will see what happens this year.

Gripping Story

This was published in 2018 after the initial black hole observation run in April of 2017, but before the results are made public. The Event Horizon Telescope is 7 or 8 specialized radio telescopes around the world organized to take a picture of the black hole in the center of our galaxy. It's a gripping story, years in that making, full of science and science politics. Politics because if successful, up to three people will win the Nobel physics from this. So there is lots of politics and maneuvering. The image was taken in April 2017, but it is taking a lot of time to process and correlate the image data to get a picture.

Excellent Introduction to the Reformation

Alister McGrath wrote an excellent introduction to the Reformation. He provided very helpful insights into the dissatisfaction of the Roman Catholic Church, its impotence on settling doctrine prior to the Reformation, the rising level of education of the laity, scholasticism, humanism, and the development of these ideas into the different Reformation communities. The weakest part of the book was the impact of the Reformation in history into thw modern era last chapter. I will have to think about that. McGrath mainly emphasized the offshoots of economics, governments, and science. He could have gone into religious impact more. He did mention how Protestantism led to a more entrepreneurial spirit where people would form their own churches and through aform of Darwinism, adapt to changing environments and culture. But I think this misses some of the major theological implications that reverberate to this day, such as justification by faith alone. Granted, I am a theologically conservative Reformed layperson who drinks in theology, so McGrath didn't scratch my partucular theological itch at that point.

Overall an excellent book. It kept me riveted to the end. The reader/narrator did a very good job. I highly recommend this book as part of a variety of books dealing with Reformation topics.

Fascinating Book

I don't have the qualifications to rate this book. This is my first introduction to economics. it causes me to think and be very skeptical of all politician's promises, of all stripes. Slogans like making America Great, or living wage, betray non-thinking. I will not look at policitcs and economics the same again.

Excellent biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Excellent biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. I felt that I got to know the man, his family background, his thoughts, theology, his struggles, and passions. The reader did an outstanding job reading the biography. The book and performance kept me engrossed in it to the very end.
