Historia
As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret.

Off to a slow start
Revisado: 02-02-11
Loved Tana French's latest mystery, so I set about to listen to them all starting with this first one. I'm just starting Part II, and I will say it's picking up. Part I was disappointing. The most distracting part was (1) the emphasis on the love interest between what's-his-name and Cassie and (2) the incredibly effeminate protagonist/narrator. I keep expecting him to finally discover he's gay -- but so far he is resolutely loving Cassie and he keeps referring to his past hetero affairs. The characterization either is badly flawed or there's a big "surprise" coming in Part III. Not that I mind a gay protagonist, and I'm not longing for torrid sex scenes. I just don't appreciate a heterosexual (or any other character) who isn't believable.

If only it was all there
Revisado: 11-16-10
The book is so great -- and more timely today than when it was first published. My only sadness is the abridgment. I wanted it all. Had to go buy the printed book to fill in the blank spots.

Behind the ornate gates of the academy, she finds a disturbing realm where students and teachers must follow the dean's bizarre therapies.

A good read and well read
Revisado: 11-16-10
A good story, and about that reader -- I guess you either love her or hate her. I find her story telling exactly right for the deadpan humor of the first person fictional narrator. I loved her in the first Cornelia Read I bought, so I was not dissuaded by the negative reviews. I suggest trying the samples.

Historia
Madeline Dare, a tough-talking, shotgun-toting ex-debutante, is not your average detective. Then again, not much about her life is what she expected. Born of old money into high society, she married into a Syracuse farming family and a bottom-of-the-food-chain job writing puff pieces for the local newspaper. Her emotional barometer these days ranges from dry irony to whining exasperation.

Great narration

This is a pretty good book, though rambling in Part II, but the narrator is smashing. Great timing. Numerous distinct voices. A new favorite for me.

Wonderful

I almost didn't buy this based on a couple of reviews that said it dragged at the beginning. Oh, my. Not for me. I love this almost as much as John Sandford, and that is saying a LOT.
